SMITH, of Montrose, who rep resents the Fire Association of Philadelphia, was in town yesterday 011 his way to settle the loss of DAVID CRANKY, of Springfield, who had a large barn burned 0:1 Friday night last. After two years of married life a precious little girl baby has been sent to bless the hith erto incomplete household of our young friend, R. G. MILLER and his accomplished wife. While REKD exhibits some pardonable disappointment that the is not a boy, his friends console him with the hope that " there are more to follow," and he may have better fortune in the future. Mr. CHARLES P. WAGNER, who was night operator at this place, and was afterward sla tioned at Wyalusing as day operator, has been promoted to the position of station agent at Wysnuking, Bradford county. The L. V. R. R. Co., don't often make mistakes in selecting men to fill important positions, and this case is not an exception to the rule. The deceased was quiet and industrious, a great reader and thoroughly conversant in the doings of the day. lie whs 37 years of age. and single. The funeral will take place to morrow, Rev. D. CRAFT officiating. ED AYKHS of the Troy stage route has met with misfortunes of late. His three horses have all been sick and one of them died in Troy. The case came to the knowledge of EI.EAZER POMKROY, Esq., one of the most benevolent and kind-hearted gentlemen in that town, and he gave practical expression t) bis sympathy by starting a contribution fund which has been increased enough to buy another horse. The very flattering exhibit of the financial condition of the borough whicn the statement of Treasurer KINGSBURY, printed in another column, makes, will be perused with pride by every patriotic citizen. It has been a long time since the borough was free from debt and we join with the Treasurer in commend ing the wise and prudent administration of the borough government for the past few years, which has led to a result so earnestly desired by every tax-payer. With moderate TOWANDA, PA., FRIDAY. FEBRUARY iS, ISBI. taxation and a continuance of the prudent policy displayed of late years, the borough cau be kept out of debt in the future,while the streets and side walks may be kept in repair and all necessary improvements prosecuted. Let the watch-word hereafter be " Iveep out of debt." In according •' honor to whom honor is due," in connection with the management of the finances, Treasurer and Clerk KINGSBU RY and Collector WICKIIAM are entitled to special mention. Their duties have been faithfully, honestly and promptly performed. The Presbyterian church was dedicated this afternoon, the Rev. Doctor Stewart of Tow anda, preaching an interesting sermon. Rev. C. C. Corss of Smithfield, Rev. llenry Welles of Kingston, Rev. Mr. Sewell of Troy and Rev, Mr. Ilood of the M. E. Church, Athens, together with the revered pastor, Rev. Mr. McMaster, assisted in the exercises. The cost of the church was $9,004 10. The collection to-day amounted to s'2oo, leaving a small debt of only three or four hundred dol lars vet to be provided for. Services will be held the balance of this week and part of next, at least. The edifice presents a neat exterior and the inside is very attractive. The singing was very fine and the effect ex hilerating, the perfect accoustic arrange ments of the auditorium giving it full efl'ect. There was a large attendance, Rev. Hurl but, of Waverly, was in the audience. Athens, Feb. 10. WILL. Rev. WM. MCGLATHERY lias formally re signed the parish of St. Stephens Church, pittstield, Mass., 011 account of failing health. In reluctantly accepting the resignation the Vestry unanimously adopted the following resolutions: WHEREAS,The Reverend William McGlath ery has felt compelled, by reason of continued ill 'health, to offer his resignation as Rector of this parish, therefore Resolved, That while we accept this resig nation. we do so with a sincere regret at the cause which renders such a step necessary. llesolocd , That we present to Mr. McG lath ery our hearty thanks for the zeal he lias shown 11s a parish priest in his care for this church, believing as we do that the present harmony in the congregation, and the in crease of churchly interest and devotion are largely due to his teachings and ministrations during the live years of his rectorship. Cullom of Illinois,has just return ed to Springfield, from Mentor, and says that he believes it is settled that the Sec retaryship of the Interior will be offered to Robert T. Lincoln. The thirtieth ballot for U. S. Senator at Ilarrisburg yesterday resulted as fol lows : Beaver, 78' Bayne, 50, Wallace, 77. A joint committee of the contending re- publican factions met last night to make an effort to agree npou a candidate. At 2 o'clock this morning tliey were still in session.
