General Grant visited the New Orleans

met a committee from Mobile.
All the bribers except Kembie appeared

bie is expected to follow suit.
At the organization of Lancaster City
Councils the Republicans bolted, giving
the Democrats important olT.ifls in the
city's administration.
The temperance friends of Francis Mur
phey in Philadelphia have presented him

nished, in that city.
Tolerably full reports collected at Wil
mington, Del., indicate that the Peninsula
peach crop will not be affected by the re
cent cold weather.
The cremation society of Zurish, Swit
zerland, announces its intention to issue
a loan, with premiums, to procure Un
necessary capita! to construct buildings
and apparatus.
Miss Ellie Sherman, the pretty young
daughter of the General, is to he married
early in May to Lieutenant Thackara, ol
the Navy. The wedding is to be celebrated
at General Sherman's house in Wash
ington.
The London Standard's dispatch from
Vienna reports that the Kygptian troops
have been defeated in Romunli at Bjerbernb.
The King of Abyssinia is marching with
a large army against King Melenck of
Shoa.
Yesterday morning a Lehigh Valley pas
senger train ran into a coal train at Coal
port. Eight coal cars were thrown into
the canal, the passenger engine was badly
damaged, and the fireman was hurt.
Both tracks were blockaded three or four
hours.
At the recent town election in old Con
cord, Mass., only twenty votes were cast
for the School Committee unci all of these
by women. The result was that three
men and one woman were elected; the
men for a period of three years, and the
woman for only one year.
It is expected that the St. Gothard tun
nel will be available for the transportation
of the mails by the end of the year. The
opening of the railway will be somewhat
delayed by the construction of accessory
tunnels; but the work will probably be fin
ished by .July 1, 18S2.
Fred. Erb, Jr., has accepted a chal
lenge of Caption A. 11. llogardus for a
shooting match, for §SOO n side, to shoot
100 birds at 30 yards English rules. The
match to be shot at St. Louis during
the last week in April. Erb van
quished BQgardus in a match there on
March 10.

of all the eugiueers, firemen and brakemeu
in their employ, for the purpose of discov
ering who among them, if any, are afflict
ed with what is known as color blinduess,
and also for the purpose of testing their
vision in other respects.
Seuator David Davis who has been
called a rieh raau, is by his friends called
"land poor." Since he first went to Illi
nois his surplus earnings have been in
vested in land. He lives very simply in
Washington, occupying two plain rooms
in the National Hotel, His attire is al
ways simple. He is an agreeable talker,
aud a man of pleasant courtesy.
