The News Condensed.
Petroleum has been discovered in Ala
bama.
Couard F. Stark, a well-known lawyer,
and president of the People's Savings
Bank, of Pittston, is dead.
An attempt will be made to-day to seat
Governor Curtin, from the XXtli District
of Pennsylvania.
Boring for petroleum is still proceeding
in the district of Dithmarchen, Prussia,
a depth of 380 metres being reached.
A new directory of St. Louis, contains
120,000 names. The city's population is
estimated at 540,000.
Saturday night lightning struck a 10.000
barrel oil tank belonging to the Fox Farm
Pipe Line. The tank is loss.
Upshur Johnson, a prominent grain op
erator of Baltimore, committed suicidi
yesterday by shooting. Cause unknown.
Deaths in New York last week, 543;
births, 583; marriages, 121. The police
irrested 1.223 persons.
It is understood that Edgar M. Marble,
i law officer in the Interior Department,
will be appointed Commissioner of l'ai
•nts, to succeed Paine.
Within a fortnight two of the Prcsby
erian churches of Buffalo have lost tlieii
pastors, and it is expected that a third
will be vacant in a few days.
It is expected that both the army am

Christ Church of Boston, erected in
1723, is older than any other church tali

The arrivals of immigrants at the port
of New York amounted last week to 8,837.

Secretary Thompson has instructed the

might land his cargo at either Kingston,
Queenstown or Galway, as the Herald re
lief committee may desire. The vessel
sailed Saturday.
The report of the Elections Committee
of the House, by which the Democrats
hope to deprive Mr. Washburn, of Minne
sota, of the seat to which he was elected
by a large majority, is said to bear evi
dence of having been mainly the work of
Mr. Donnely, the defeated candidate.
The striking hardware moulders of
Reading have resolved to remain out.
There is a relief committee, which has
just bought a supply of gfbccries and pro
visions for use by the strikers. Twenty
live moulders were at work at the Heading
Hardware Company's shops yesterday.
The six counties which compose the
Pittsburg, Peun., Dcauery oftbe Protest
ant Episcopal Church, with a population
of 80,000, had ten years ago only two
clergymen for the four parishes of the
district. Now there are Ave resident
clergymen, seven parishes, ai:d eight
other points where church scrvires are
held.
