The News Condensed.
The English University race was won
by the Oxford in 21:23.
The Democracy ot Rhode Island have
nominated Horace M. Kimball for Gover
nor.
Col. Syngeand wife have been liberated
—the Greeks receiving the ransom deman
ded.
John Quinn, once a prominent Fenian,
hung himself in a Buffalo police station
yesterday.
The Emperor William's birthday was
celebrated Saturday. The Emperor look
ed hale and well.
The steamer on which Gen. Grant sailed
is said to be lost at sea. The report is
not confirmed.
A Harrisburg despatch says the outlook
for ihe Greenback Convention is not
promising.
A township supervisor in Berks county
surreptitiously took a drink from a bottle
in a drug store, supposing.it to be brandy.
It proved to be poison, and he died.
The Grecnbackers will hold their
State Convention at llarrisburg to-day.
They don't make a veny big crowd this
year.
Joseph Vanmetter, near Keyport, X. J.,
had his barns and other outbuildings
burned by an incendiary; several head
of cattle and live horses were burned to
death.
Mr. Parnell, arrived at Queenstowu
yesterday on the steamer Baltic. He was
enthusiastically received 011 landing, and
was last night entertained at a dinner
given in his honor by the farmer's Club.
President Hayes, with democratic sim
plicity, walks to church and walks home
with vigorous stride and with head erect,
lie almost always takes a walk before
breakfast and a drive after oflice hours.
The Allegheny County Democratic
primaries held Saturday evening resulted
in a victory for Tilden, the anti-Tilden
forces securing but thirty delegates out
of over *,OO to ten different Senator.al ami
Legislative Conventions.
Governor Colquitt, of Georgia, is de
scribed as a working Christum—a man
who arries his religion into ditily life. It
is said that probably no man in Georgia
gives as much toward the support of
church and charity as does Mr. Colquitt.
During the progress of an entertain
ment given by the public school in the
principal hull at Lincoln, Lancaster Coun
ty, Saturday night, at which 300 per
sons were present, part of the floor gave
way, precipitating about 125 people to the
floor below, Many persons escaped by
jumping our of the windows, which are
about twelve feel from the ground.
A month ago, a secret mcctihgof Irish
men was held in Philadelphia. At which
a committee was appointed to organize a
revolutionary movement in America to
free Ireland from England's rule. This
committee issued circulars to 1,000 Irish
associations and organizations, inviting
to vote on a location for the holding of a
Convention. Two hundred and lifly re
plies, with nearly a thousand signatures,
were opened at a meeting of the commit
tee. Of the votes cast Philadelphia was
the choice. It was agreed to hold the
Convention in Philakelphia, to continue
from June 24 to July 3. The call for the
Convention will be issued in a few days.
