Mrs. Ilayes is very unconventional, and
gossip delights to make much of it. One
sunny day, recently, her carriage was ob
served standing in front of Judge Bently's
residence, Washington, from which she
herself and a latly friend had just stepped
out. It was the President's carriage, for
its panels bore the National crest, but the
idea of the President's wife making ordi
nary calls paased comprehension. What
was more the call was noted for its un
precedented length. Mrs. Ilayes and her
companion seem to have remained long
enough to partake of lunch and it was as
certained to have been true that Mrs.
Hayes had stayed to a-lunch with her old
friend Mrs. Bently, who was, formerly, a
Mrs. McCoy, the widow of an army officer,
and was for some years an employe in the
Interior Department, until her marriage
with Judge Bently, a year ago. Mrs Ilayes
is said to be very informal in her reception
of friends. She sometimes receives ex
cursion parties with great zest. She is
hardly ever without guests,usually per
sonal friends. She avoids, like poison the
circles, sets and cliques that have affiicted
the White House. A metropolitan letter
tells this bit about her woman nature:
"When in New York last fall, I wanted,"
she said, "to look into the shop windows
just as other people do, so one evening
just after dark, I tied on my bonnet, and
Fanny and I went out and stared into just
as many winpows as we wanted to."
The Buffalo Commercial sets forth with
such withering setire the attitude of a cer
tain journal that we quote: "A feeble
protest comes from the Springfield It (pub
lican against the nomination of either
Grantor Blaine. But what sort of Republi
can dose that once powerfully-edited news
paper represent? It certainly does not
speak for earnest, •stalwart' men who
will go to Chicago, determined first to
promote the success of the Republican
party. For years has the Republican
been devoted to an 'independence' which
means nothing but under handed opposi
tion to the Republican party from those
who are too cowardly or too politic to
wear the Democratic uniform and come
out in the field for a square fight. The
Republican is the organ of a milk-shop,
spurious Republicanism, that stands
ready to throw the fight into the Demo
cratic party's hands provided that the
Republican candidates do not suit and
arrogant, mutal-admirationsociety among
certian would-be statesmen in New Eng
land New York city. The party can elect
either Graut or Blaine with out aid from
the Spring field Republican just as easily
as it did elect Grant in 1872, in spite of
that paper's open revolt and desperate
resistance.
Buffalo Commercial: The intensely re
spectable Republicans, the vjlvct-gloved
conservatives, the ice-tea reformers rep
resented by the Springfield Republican,
evidently will not be satisfied unless the
Republican party first ask the will and
pleasure of the Democratic managers be
fore any nomination is made at the Chica
go Convention. Perhaps, too, this policy
would suit the New York "Scratchers."
They are ready to do "anything to beat
Grant." and it is certain that the "Solid
South" Democrats do not want to see
Grant again President. The "Conserva
tives" in Massachusetts, and the "Scratch
ers" in New York, have kindly drawn up
a list comprising the Republicans for
whom they will not vote. Now why not
have the Republican party abstain from
any action until the Democrats and the
various species of the "Independent" po
litical genus, decide what the Republicans
ought to do, and then tho Chicago Con
vention can govern itself accordingly.
