Bismarck lias recovered his health, and
had a long conference with Emperor Wil
liam on Friday.
O'Leary won the walking match in San
Francisco. At 10 o'clock Saturday even
ing he had scored 510 miles to Weston's

Churches seem to flourish in LeadviHe.
The Episcopal congregation there have
offered SI2OO to one lady singer, and SOOO
to another for one yerr.
Russia has asked the Powers to make
a united protest to China against the exe
cution at Pekin of Cliung How, the late
Chinese ambassador to Russia.
The steamship "Montana," of the Oni
on line, was stranded Saturday morning,
on the rocky coast of Wales. All on board,
together with the baggage and mails,
were safely landed.
The friends of the Fitz John Porter
bill have taken warning from the speech

Mrs. Belva A. Lock wood, the Washing
ton female lawyer, has written an open

with numerous immoralities, and saj
she can substantiate her allegations in a
court of justice.
Secretary Sherman says he intends
every week to invest all the revenues, less
actual expenses and a proportionate share
of the accruing interest of the public
debt, in the purchase of 5 and 6 per cent
bonds 011 public offers in New York.
Chancellor E. O. llavcn in a recent let
ter staongly advocates the adoption of
measures for the improvement of the con
dition of the Onondaga Indians. He fa
vors the abolishing of the tribal system
and asks that they have the privilege of
separate ownership, made inalienable, 011
proper conditions.
An expedition is about to be fitted out
by the French Government to co-operate
with a similar American enterprise in ex
ploring the remains of Aztec civilization
in Mexico and Yucatan. It is expected
that valuable additions will be made to
American history as a result of the expe
dition.
Socretary Sherman has written the fol
lowing letter to a friend iu Chicago 1
WASHINGTON, March 10.
MY DEAR Slß—Your letter of the 7th
inst., in which you express strong dissent
to my retiring from the Presidential race
is recevined. I never for a moment con
templated such a course. The rumor
you spoke of was 110 doubt promptly,
denied. The first public mention of my
candidaey was In the inference drawn
from my letter to Hon. Iloskin, of New
York, in which I stated what I would
seek to do in case of my nomination atidj
election. Since that time I have been
considered by the public as a candidate
and so regarded myself, with the purpose
neither to press any one to support me,
nor to deline such friendly aid as was of
fered ine. This position I intend to oc
cupy to the end. 1 don't think it neces
sary for me fo belittle or arraign Grant.
Blaine, or any one else, nor will I
use my official position to promote my
candidacy.

The February report of railroad statis
tics shows the gross earnings of thirty
three of the principal railroads of this
country to have increased about thirty
four per cent, over the corresponding
period last year. This increase is largely
due to and an indication of the general
revival in business.
