A Leadville dispatch says the celebrated iron mine sold there on Saturday to New York parties for $3,000,000. George. Hilton, the postmaster of South Parsonfleld, Me., is eighty-one years old, and has occupied that position since 1830. The Coal Bluff mine, in the Mononga hela valley, is on Are, and it is feared that the entire mine will burn up. The iron ore of Blair county is develop ing new qualities of value, which are des tined to make it much sought after. A fire at Petrolia, Butler county, on Friday morning, destroyed five buildings, causing a loss of $25,000, which is partly covered by insurance. The exports of beef to England last was much larger than for several months before and the demand is increas iug. P The Erie Railroad reports an increase - in gross earnings for January, over Jan uary of 1879, of $149,000, the increase in net earnings being $164,000. On Saturday afternoon, while Thomas Dotty, Samuel Morgan and Samuel Vall haadt were attempting to cross the Ohio river, at Beaver, in a skiff, they were drowned. The triennial conclave of the Grand En campment of Knights Templar will be held in Chicago on the 17th, 18th and 19th of August. Twenty thousaud Knights are expected to be present. It is stated that of 1,100 graduates of the Franklin Home for Inebriates in Philadelphia 500 have been absolutely cured. The "tapering off" method is never employed in the Franklin Home. The New-York Express remarks, "No man should be nominated for the second place who would not honor the first place on the ticket," and suggests in another 1 paragraph that Judge Church, Clarkson N. The riot bribery cases came up for trial In Harrisburg yesterday, Judges Pearson and Henderson on the bench. Messrs. Brewster, Mann, Cassidy, Herr, Lamber tou, Albright, Weiss, Hall, Jorden and Armstrong, counsel for defense, and Messrs. Ilollinger (District Attorney), J. W. Simontou, Matt Carpenter, Frank B. Gowen, Jere. Balck, J. C. McAlarncy aud George Irwin, counsel for the com monwealth, were all present. In the cases of the commonwealth vs. Charles B. Sal ter, William F. Rumberger and J. and Jesse R. Crawford, charged with corrupt Solicitations, pleas of guttty were entered by defendants. William A. Kemble en tered a plea of guilty, and protested that he never did corruptly offer any money or things of value to either or any of the per sons named in the bill of indictment. Judge Pearson seriously doubted the le gality of this form of plea. The plea was then withdrawn until to-morrow after noon.
