The value of live stock exported to
Great Britain from Canada in 1879 was
$2,681,000, against $2,117,526 in 1878.

The Philadelphia Produce Exchange
lias succeeded in obtaining a decision
from Magistrate List holding John l'ower
and Frank Lou for trial for selling oleotn

The Princess Louise is still confined to
j her bed from the effects of the late acci
l dent. It is said the injuries from which
| she is suffering arc of a more serious
j character than at first reported.
The sleigh in which Robert Morris
accoinpaned his guests, General and Mrs.
Washington, General Lee and others, on
pleasant Winter rides, is now owned and
still used by Mr. Fox, of Foxburg,
j Penn.
Mr. John C. Calhoun, the only grand
! son of Ike South Carolinian, who is at
I the same time his namesake, is a wealthy
planter in Arkansas—which does away
with the story that he is a saloon-keeper
in St. Louis.
Professor Proctor says that he finds
the interest in scientific matters much
more widely spread in America than in
England, more people attending lectures
here and reading and thinking intelligent
ly upon these subjects.
A Convention was held at the Pennsyl
vania Military Academy, Chester, on the
23d inst., to determine who was the
Presidential candidate of the Academy.
There were ninety-live delegates, eghty
seven of them being Republicans. After
quite a number of speeches, a vote was
taken resulting as follows: Grant 51;
Blaine, 26; Sherman, 19; Tildeu, 5; Sey
mour, 3.
It has been decided by the Trunk I lues
to reduce the rate of grain and flour from
Chicago, eastbond 5 cents per hundred
pounds, beginning March Ist, and to make
a similar reduction on other articles, be
ginning March Bth.
A twelve-class classification was adopted
in place of the present four classes. To
bacco was placed in a class by itself—the
twelfth.
The postal agem y at Springfield, Mass.
shipped 36,488,500 domestic postal cards
in January the largest month's business
ever done. The international card does
not have so great a demand as was ex
pected, and but a small part of the offices
of the country have ordered a supply,
New York took 100,000 when they were
first put out and has sold but 20 000 so
far. The agency sent out 376,000 of
them last month.
The "Mississippi plan" is put in the
shade by the new Louisiana invention for
silencing a minority.
Private telegrams bring the intelligence
that the Democrats of the .State Senate
have passed resolutions suspending the
entire minority, numbering six or seven
Senators, and that the latter are now ex
excluded from all participotion in the pro
ceedings. Their offence consists in
having exercised their constitutional
right of petition to Congress.
