The directors of the lirst National Bank

Kev. Dr. J. B. Jeter, one of the editors
of the Religious llcrald , the organ of the
Baptist church in Virginia, died at llich
motid yesterday morning, aged seventy
eight. He was the author of several reli
gious works, and widely known.
Mr. \V. W. Coicoran's desire to add a
port rait gallery and school of art to the
"Corcoran Art Gallery,'' in Washington,
is defeated by Admiral S. I'. Lee's persis
t nt refusal to sell, even at an exorbitant
price, the necessary adjacent lots.
The Emperor Francis Joseph of Austra

the morning, prays in his private chapel,
ami then takes a cup of coffee with bread,
and rats no more till his lunch of brown
bread and beer is served at noon.
A Marion, < >hio. special reports the al
leged discovery of a perpetual motion, by
Win. O'Ben and Win. Hyett, of Richmond
township, Marion county. The machine
consists of a large iron wheel, containing
a number of slides, inclined planes, &c.
It will start itself. The model lias been
sent to Washington for a patent. The
machine is kept under lock and key.
At a meeting of the Department of Su
preintendence of the Educational Associ
ation at Washington, a resolution was of
fered by Mr. Wicket sham, of Pennsyl
vania to appoint a committee of ten to
take into consideration the formation of
a national council of education, to report
a plan of organization to the Board of
Directors of the National Teachers' Asso
ciation, at their meeting at Chautauqua,
N. Y., in July last, was adopted.

Nicholas Mcirs, of Pittsburg, possessed
of large means, died last week, and it was
found when his will was registered that
after leaving his son ten dollars, and mak
ing small provision for some friends, that
the balance of his property was to be di
vided between a Catholic church and a
number of charitable institutions. The
law of the Suite requires that where a tes
tutor wishes to bequeath property to chai-
Ity or religion that the will must be made
