The Daily Review. Towanda, Pa., Monday, Feb., 16, 1880. KDH-MKH : D. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N. ALVORD. '•Daily iteciete" only 40 cent* per month. Try it. The lYibune was not entirely satisfied with the manner in which the delegates to the Harrishurg Convention allowed DON. CAMERON to dictate their action, and has heeu sending out circular letters to the members of the standing cornmitties of the several counties of the State request ing them to state their presidential prefer ences. Out of 267 replies, 216 declared for Blaine: Grant 40. Among* the ans wers published we find the following from this county : Alba—First, Blaine; second, Sherman; Geo. H. Webb. Wyalusing First, Blaine; second, Blaine. N. J. Gaylord. Sayre—First, Blaine; second, Edmonds or Sherman or Grant. Would vote for Grant if nominated: but think it would be very injudicious to nominate him. J. F. Oveushire. Athens—First, Blaine; second, Graut; A. C. Elsbrec. (Athens will probably change the order now.) Kummerfield—Ffrst, Washbourne; sec oud, Blaine; No third term man. Peter Landmcsaer. It has been evident for a long time that the first preference of the Republicans of Pennsylvania is Blaine; and the trickery by which the convention was made to indicate an apparent different state of affairs, has intensified the opposi tion to Graut, and should he be nominat ed, which seems very probable to us, Don Cameron's stupidity in forcing through the convention a vote of instruction will cost him many votes. The Candidacy of Gen. Grant. It is an excellent maxim in politics, as well as in war, to never take counsel from your enimies, and the evident anxiety of the democratic party to induce us to believe that Gen. Grant is not their strongest can didate, and that the popular predujice agaiust a so-oalled "third term," is so uni versal and widespread that it would in evitably insure his overwhelming defeat, should serve to strengthen rather than weaken his chances for a renomination. He is not a candidate in the ordinary ac ceptation of that term. He does not seek the nomination for the honors which it would bring, nor does Ire seek it at all. Standing entirely aloof from the turmoil and strife of the contest, and refusing to ' n i take any part in it whatever, he merely says, "If the convention should nominate inc 1 shall deem it my duty to the Repub lican party and the country, to accept." Nor do we apprehend that he would take the nomination at all, unless tendered with a fair degreeol" unanimity. If Iris candidacy shall prove the cause of intern al dissensions and an acrimonious st rug gle, he would withhold his consent, and the Convention would be left free to be stow the nomination upon some other candidate. In other words, unless he is satisfied that the country demands his services—that the exigencies of the contest which is now approaching require his nomination—he will not, under any circumstances, consent to become the standard-bearer of the Republican party in the coming Presidential campaign. But in considering the question, we re peat, the Republican party should not take counsel from the Democracy. Their apprehensions of Republican disaster should be regarded as otnens of success, and their predictions of defeat .should he looked upon as confessions of a crow ning and glorious victory. And what would such a victory mean? It would mean sta bility in our goverineutal affairs. It would mean an enduring peace within our | own borders. It would mean an era of! prosperity such as this country has never before witnessed or dreamed of. It would mean a degree of respect and friendship on the part of foreign govern ments such as wc have never before en joyed. and it would place the Government of the United States where it ought to be, first and foremost among the nations of the earth.
