The Presiding Elder will occupy the pulpit of the M. E. Church to-morrow. The ice on the river at this place broke up and <4 quietly passed away" yesterday after noon. Remember the Quarterly Confer* lice at the Methodist church to-morrow night; at 7 o'clock. GEERGE LYNCIICOMB has employed an excellent barber to assist him, and his cus tomers will now be served with dispatch. Since Prof. VENNOR'S weather predictions have proven to be so accurate, those who failed to secure a supply of ice during the late eold period, feel no uneasiness, as the Professor has ordered another "freeze up', during the latter part of the month. Owing to our unprecedented rush of job work, we have been compelled for the past two weeks to omit the Sunday School notes on Thursday, and column of Sunday reading on Saturday. We hope to be able to resume both these departments after next week. lion. B. RUSH JACKSON and A. B. Prof. MCKKK, of our Graded School, very kindly furnished the RKVIKW with an inter esting report of the Teachers' Association. Rut it is unavoidably crowded out to-day. It. shall appear on Monday. We learn that J. L. EI.SBREE has turned Benedict, and lead to the hvmenial altar one of the fair daughters of Athens township. Better late than nevei. Hon. G. A. GROW is in town. No man in the nation is entitled to or meets a more hearty reception from the people of Bradford. Mrs. PIKRCB, of Oswego, who nas been visiting at THICO. MULLOCK'S, returned home yesterday. Mrs. T. MULLOCK has gone to Waverlv and Oswego, N. Y., and will be absent several days. The sum of eleven hundred dollars was sub scribed to the Herald Irish Relief Fund by members of Congress, in sums of five dollars each. We notice among the number our own member. Col. EDWARI> OVKUTON, Jr. The Col. has many warm Irish friends, both among his clientage and in politics, who will not forget him for his generosity on behalf of an unfortunate people. We are pleased to note the promotion of Mr. SAMUEL ZKIGLKR from the position of night operator, to the agency of Frenehtown Station. Mr. ZKIGLKR is a yonng m n emi nently qualified for the position, and we con gratulate! the company in securing so good a successor to Mr. T. G. HARDING, lately re signed.— Tunkhannoc.k Republican. SINGULAR ACCIDENT.—AS Dr. I>. S. PRATT stood in front of CM AMBKRLINS. talking with another gentleman yesterday afternoon, he lost his balance and fell down the steps lead ing to the Senate saloon. When lie was taken up it was found lie had sustained quite seri ous injuries in the way of a broken linger and ugly bruises. Mr. BUFKINGTON procured a carriage and took the Doctor home, and we have no doubt he will soon he around again. One of the most prosperous and enterpris ing of Towanda's business houses is the well known establishment of 1). w. SCOTT & GO. We incidentally referred to the improve ments going on at the Grocery Store and Bakery of D. W. SCOIT & Co. the other day. Now that the work is completed we run speak more detiinitelv in regard to the changes and improvements made. The store has been enlarged by the tearing away of the partition which separated the store from the hake-shop; the dining-room, which has been "growing small and beauti fully less," for some time past, ha* finally been dispensed with altogether, in order to make room for the rapidly bier'-i-dug trade in the grocery and provision department. Whiie the baking business is continued on a large scale as heretofore, the work is all done outside the building—under the supervision of Mr. MUNIER, who has been in the employ of the linn for the past t< n years, and enjoys the enviable reputation of being an excellent culinary artist. The best of fresh bread, biscuit, rusk and cake of ail kinds are baked daily, and furnished from a counter especially fitted up for that- branch of the business No effort will he spared to maintain tin; high rep utation the product of their oven lias hereto fore sustained. The many improvements which have been made in the arrangement of filestore are sug gestive of the practical good sense ami excel lent taste of Mr. SCOTT, ami render the store one of the most convenient and well arranged business houses of Towanda. More over. the room is filled with a choice variety of fresh groceries, whiclklutrmoni/c splendid ly in appearance with the new paint and tasty fixtures. The firm are now prepared to offer great inducements at wholesale and retail to their customers. The location i one of the best in town, and by purchasing in large quantities, and always keeping the best goods in their line, with obliging clerks and prompt atten tion to the wants of customers, we hazard nothing in predicting a prosperous career and increasing business for the tirin. So mote it be. FOK RENT.— A good store, several offices and a number of dwelling houses. T. F. Er.snicr. ULSTER, February 14, IRBO. The Teachers' Association in .session at this ! place is very largely at'ended. notwithstand ing the inclement weather. The afternoon session yesterday, was interesting and crowd ed. and last evening the house was packed, literally. Recitations by Misses MURDOCH. LAURA GKROUI.D and FKAKKIK LANDON were excellent, and a paper by I'rof. KVAN interesting. Rev. Dr. TAYLOR delivered a thoughtful and profitable address, as he always does when called upon to speak. Prof. RYAN. our first class County Superintendent, is here, and as usual promoting the cause of thorough education. Professors from nearly all- tin leading schools of the county are here, and all doing well. The people of this place are deserving of especial mention for their kind attention to thei- guests. Special mention should be made of others who art; taking an active part in making the rn< etings interesting, but the limits of a postal card and the lack of time prevents my giving even a synopsis of the exercises. We anticipate a pleasant session this morning, as the weather is more favorable. WILL. We coppv the following noti ec of the late i Prof. AI.I.KN from yesterday's Klniira Adver tiser. We cheerfully endorse all our cotem porary savs of the deceased : "On Friday last Prof. Fordvee Almon Allen, principal of the State Normal School at Mansfield. Pa., was stricken with pneumonia. Despite the most skilful care, he diedon Wed nesday night. During his illness 1h" most ; intense anxiety prevailed among the \ illager*. . and many were the prayers that went up for ' his recovery; but all in vain, lb* passed ! away Wednesday night, beloved and regp-t- ! ted by the entire community. Prof. Allen, we believe WHS horn in Tioga county, and had spent the greater portion of j his sixty years in Mansfield. He taught school in Chester county, and went to Mans- ! field about fifteen years ago to take the priu- i cipalship of the State Normal School upon ii> establishment. Having occupied the position ' a number of years, he resigned. Prof. Yen-ill ! taking his place, and about two years ago he ! again resumed the prineipalship." At or near j the time of tier establishment of the Normal, j the Soldier's Orphan's School was started, of ! which he also had charge. Ilis life was pure ly unselfish, and was spent largely in the : service of others. He was watchful of the progress of those entrusted to his care, and many a young man is indebted to him for an education and his start in the world. V young man or young w oman whom he notic ed with aspirations not likely to he gratified, unless with assistance, was his especial de- \ light. These he oftentimes hoarded freedur- 1 ing tln-ir entire school term, waiting until j they were able to repay him. II was eon-; sidered a wealthy man, i>ut. his wealth found i its way to the benefit of his fellow m< n. A few days ago tin Advertiser published the ! fact, and all the papers copied it. that Prof. | Allen had established a free reading room, well supplied, at Mansfield. This was one of ' his benefactions. Another was the Mansfield Advertiser. It was generally understood ; that Prof Allen, deeming a newspaper a bene- | tit to any community, established the Adver tiser ol that village, which is a creditable paper, ami probably by t his time able to stand alone. There are tine buildings in the \ illage, monuments of his enterprise. It seems a : challenge of the wisdom of the Creator w hen ! such men are removed, while others of no apparent use are left ; hut tlie ways of God are past finding out. and while all the people j mourn, they do not murmur at tlm dispensa tion which has taken him awa\. He leaves a wile, three adult sous, and a young daughter.
