Athens was largely represented in Towanda
by her influential property holders yesterday.
They came dewn to confer with the Commis
sioners relative to tbc assessment of that
ancient borough, and went home satisfied.
The following item from the Ithaca daily
Journal in regard to our old friend and
former townsman will be read with satis
faction by all our readers who have the honor
to know the Colonel:
"Col. J. 11. llorton has had added to his
duties and responsibilities the general agency
of the Lehigh Valley Coal Company for a
huge portion of central New York. The Col.
will not remove from town, but will be neces
sarily absent more than heretofore. He still
remains in charge of the general shipping
business at the docks and the Lehigh Valley
retail yard."
Troy and Burlington each has a licensed
hotel, for the lirst time in many years. The
late Judge LONG, of the Troy House, volun
tarily banished liquor from his hotel several
years ago, while the profits from his sales
averaged S2OOO annually; and W. 11. D.
GREEN has kept a temperance house in Bur
lington for years. Both of the houses were
famous for the excellent fare provided, and
the quiet and order always observable. It is a
pity they could not have been continued as
temperance houses. Are the temperance
people altogether blameless in not offording
them such a generous support that the pro
prietors would have no desire to engage in
rum-selling in connection with the hone ruble
and necessary avocation of hotel-keeping?
ROBERT J. SHERMAN, whose death we an
nounced yesterday, was 38 years old. lie
came to Towanda when a boy, some twenty
four or five years ago, and learned the trade
of cabinet maker with JAMES MACKINHON.
In 18(11 he enlisted in the 141 st Regiment, and
served during the war. On the restoration
of peace he returned to Towanda, and in
June 18(16 married Miss ELSIE FROST.
Mr. HHKKMAN bad suffered from poor
health much of the time for some years, and
about two years ago met with an accident
which deprived him of the sight of one eye.
Something over a yej r ago he was appoint
ed Mail Agent on the 8. L. & S. Railroad,
which position he held at the time of his
death.
The deceased was an industrious, sober,
honest man, and had many friends among the
people of Towanda. He leaves a wife and
one child to mourn his early death; but their
grief is tempered with faith, that their loved
one has gone before; that he has put off the
mortal to put on immortality. "Blessed are
the dead who die in the Lord."
The funeral will take place to-morrow,
from the residence of J. O. KHOST, on Main
street, at 2 o'clock P. M.

DEPT. OF PKNNA., G. A. It. >
February 11, 1880. J
Members of the Post are requested to meet
at Military Ifall on Thursday, Feb. 12, at
10:30 A. M., to attend the funeral of Comrade
ROBERT SHERMAN, at 11 o'clock.
By order of
GEO. V. MYKR, Com.
To the Editors of the Review: Your re
marks on the verdict "Not guilty, but to pay
the costs," suggest another form, perhaps
preferable, which is said to have been used
on a certain occasion, in a trial for sheep
stealing, "Not guilty, if he will leave the
county ." Yours, Ac.,
LKX.
Perseverenee.
One step and then another,
And the longest walk is ended;
One stitch and then another.
And the largest rent is mended;
One brick upon another.
And the highest wall is made;
One flake upon another.
And the deepest snow is laid.
So the little coral workers,
Isv their slow and constant motion,
Have built those pretty islands
In the distant dark blue ocean.
And the noblest undertakings
Mini's wisdom hath conceived,
By oft-repeated efiort
Have been patiently achieved.
Then do not look disheartened
On the work you have to do.
And say that such a mighty task
You never can get through;
But just endeavor day by day
Another point to gain,
And soon the mountain which you feared
Will prove to be a plain!
"Rome was not ouilt in a day,"
The ancient proverb teaches,
And nature, by her trees and flowers.
The same sweet sermon preaches.
Think not of far-off Unties,
But of duties which are near.
And having once begun the work.
Resolve to persevere.
