genuine, is sold at the stores in town.
A Washington excursion train will pass |
over the L. V. to-night.
The Episcopal Mite Society will meet to
morrow evening at the house of GEORGE D.
STROUD, Esq. A cordial invitation is ex
tended to all.
Wednesday of this week, being the first day j
of Lent, or "Ash Wednesday," there will be
service in Christ Church at 10:30 A. M. and 4
p. M.
Don't forget the entertainment to be given
this eveing in the hall. Those not wishing
to stay to the performance after supper,
need not pay the admission fee. Children
will be admitted for 15 cents.
A little Miss in the Third Ward, who evi
dently has not enjoyed the. instruction of
"the Church." was told by a companion the
other day th: t she could not do a, certain
thing on Ash Wednesday "Well." replied the
little dissenter, "I don't care if It's dirt Wed
nesday."
What more important and useful object of
public good can we attain now in Towanda,
than a library, from which our children and
ourselves may draw amusement, instruction,
andennohling influences. Show your approval
of such a project, and do all you can to make
it a fact, by coining to the library entertain,
ment at the hall to-night.
The Court House hell was rung yesterday
morning to notify Judge MORROW that the
jurv in the case of the Common wealth vs.
VANN and BARNES, charged with burning
the barn of GUY SMITH, bad agreed upon a
verdict. The jury were sent out Saturday
afternoon, and failed to agree in time to
report that evening. They found the defend
ants not guilty, but directed that thev pay
the costs.
A "leap year" party will come off at the
resicence at WILLIAM GRIFKIS, on Wednes
day evening of this week. The occasion
will be in honor of Miss EMMA GKIKKIH, aud
a large number of her associates arc ex
pected to be in attendance. The girls are to
do the "inviting," and of course no young
man will he so ungalhint as to "give the mit
ten" to the fair one who may indicate her
partiality for him, by asking the pleasure of
his company for the evening.
Times have changed. Some years ago, not
many, an apprentice to the printing business
was expected and required to remain on duty
until the work of the day was completed, but
now, like the "jour," the devil thinks he must
"skedaddle" as soon as the hell of SS. Peter
and Paul indicates that the hour of six has
arrived. To this change of custom our read
ers who failed to receive the REVIEW, Satur
day evening, must attribute the cause. One,
of our compositors left in- the morning with
out notice, which delayed the paper until late
in the afternoon, and as the carrier had only
completed half his route at 6 o'clock, our up
town readers were left without a REVIEW.
The like shall not occur again.

The famous trotting horse "Mnllorv,'

You can get a good supper—ice cream, cake
and jelly included—for 30 cents, from
six tifl half past seven o'clock at the Hall. At
eight o'clock, after an overture by STULEN'B
Orchestra. GILMOKK'H Columbia will be
given. The SMITH Family, and two. other
good plays will follow promptly. Supper, or
cake and ice cream alone, will be served after
the playes are done.

The Rev. JOSEPH COOK, in a lecture on
spiritual manifestations said: "If the pres
ence of spirits, good and bad, were to lie
proved, I should be only t e firmer believer
in the Bible, with all its whole supernatural
history. If spirits that 'peep and mutter,' to
use the Scriptural phraseology, are abroad in
the world, and if there be need of warning
moderen generations as the ancient ones were
warned, I wish to listen to that warning. I
am not in danger of supposing that these
revelations which mislead meu and women
only too oftcu into cratic opinions and mis
chevious conduct arc from on high. I find
that, when good angola appeared in sacred
history, they flamed like the sun. The angel
that stood at the mouth of the sepulehure
c >uld not be looked upon. Ido not r< ad the
account of such appearances in our modern
circles. Ido not think it has been proved at
all that spirits can communicate with earth,
nor that the experiments prove anything ex
cept that raentnlism is not true. The moie
you prove the better; I think, you can prove
nothing of consequence, except that there is a
physic force, and that the place of materialism
is in fragments on the horns of Jupiter's
moons."
