The Republican State Convention as sembled in Harrisburg yesterday, and was organized by electing Russell Krrett (Grant), temporary chairman over Geo. V. Lawrence (Blaine), by a vote of 159 to 92. This vote fairly represented the strength of the two candidates, and no others were named. Mr. Errett. on tak ing the chair, made a short speech, advis ing harmony, and invoked the greatest of all virtues, charity of judgment among the delegates. Without transacting any other business, the Covention at 1 :20 took a recess of one hour. At 3 o'clock the Convention again as sembled. A resolution for the appoint ment of a committee to report delegates to the Chicago Convention was offered by Hon. John Cessna. Mr. Stewart, of Franklin county, offered a substitute, providing that the delegates from the several congressional districts should name the delegates to be sent to Chicago, which was lost by a vote of 150 in favor of the original resolution, to 100 for the substitute. The resolution adopted in structed the committee in making their report to include the names of such dele gates as had already been named by the congressional districts. The following resolution was offered: Resolved, That the delegates elected to the Republican National Convention from this State are hereby instructed to sup port General U. S. Grant, and to vote as a unit on all questions that may come be fore the convention. The Blaine men proposed the following substitute: Resolved, That while we pledge our selves to support the Republican party, we see no good reason for abandoning the position taken by the party in our own and other States in 1870 of opposi tion to a third Presidential term; and we hereby endorse and reaflinn the resolu tions passed by our State Convention, held at this city in 187(1, upon this ques tion. After a full disscussion the original resolution, instructing for Grant was adopted, on a call of the yeas an i nays, 133 to 113. Hon A. G. Olmstead, of Potter county, was elected permanent Chairman. Senator Lemon was nominated for Au itor General, receiving 15H votes to 93 for J. A. M. Puss mo re. The following gentlemen were nomina ted ax delegates at large to the Chicago convention: Hon. M. S. Quay, Jas. Mr- Manes, Linn Burtholemew, and Chris L. Mugce. Presidential electors at large—E. H. Benson, and H. W. Oliver. Hon. Henry Greene was unanimously nominated for Supreme Judge. O. 1). Kinney was nominated to the Chicago Convention fiotn this district. The Census. Careful preparations are being made, says the Binglwunton Republican, to have the coming census the most comprehen sive that has yet been taken. Tin- study of the different methods employed has de veloped much information in regard to the work, which is of great utlue to 'he English Government in the census of the British Islands, which is to be taken next year. The London r J)'mes compli ments'the probable acrucucy of the sys tem already adopted in this country. Some remarkable changes will be note.) in comparison with the first census of th. I'nited States, witicit was taken in 1799, and which showed a population of less than 4,000, 000 inhabitants. Virginia the i ranked tlrst, with a population ol' about 754,000. New oris was fifth in rank. The second census was taken in 1800. At that date New York occupied the third place, showing an increase of about 250,- 000. At the third census in 1810, New- York ranked second, but in 1820 gained the first place, while Virginia, which had heretofore ranked first, fell hack to the tenth, in number of inhabitants. The general census in 1870 showed a total population of 38,560,000. In time the work of enumeration will be a gigantic undertaking, and. allow ing the ratio of increase during the past ten years to have been 35 per cent, at the present time the census should show a total pop ulation of 52.000,000 inhabitants, while in 1900, if the present ratio of increase con tinues, the country will contain over ninety millions of people.
