A very pleasant affair came off at the Ward
House on Saturday evening. About 9 o'clock
a goodly number of Lima's together with
several of their friends took possession of
the public parlor, and then notified Chief
Engineer PORTER that his presence was
required in the same place. The < hief re
sponded promptly, as he. always does t > any
call from his brother firemen, but was great
ly surprised on reaching the room to tind so
large, a congrcagafion. His embarrassment
was increased when JAN. 11. CODDINO, Esq.,
arose, and in a well limed speech, presented
him with a handsome gold badge, as a testi
monial from Linta. No. t, to Mr. PORTER
for the valuable services lie lias rendered the
company as chairman of the Executive Com
mittee for a number of years. Mr. CODDINO
referred to the event ol the evening as the
the third memorable one in the annals of
company of recent date —the election of Mr..
PORTER to the Chicftuncv of the Towanda
Fire department, the iate Reception, ilie suc
cess of which was largely due to the efforts
and management of the Chief, and this to the
company, most pleasant, of all, because the
compliment w as so richly deserved.
Mr. PORTER was too much affected by the
presentation to make a speech in response to
Mr. CODDINO. and after returning his sincere
thanks, asked Senator DAVIES to speck for
him. In complying with the request the
Senator indulged in one of his most luippy
forensic efforts. He was followed byN.C.
ELSBKKK in a few appropriate remarks.
The badge is of pure gold, inches in
Cireumfernee, and bears on one side the fol
lowing inscription:
•'CLARK B. PORTER, Chief Engineer, 18, so."
On the reverse side:
"CLARK B. PORTER. January 29, ISMO.
From his friends."
