Paragraphs like the following are often i
invented by writers for the press. But j
here is a real and really fresh specimen
from the columns of the Titusville (Pa.) ;
Morning Herald of the 25th of November : j
"A CAUI) OK THANKS.
"Also an address to the Public,..
"TITUSVILLE, November 2t>.
"To the Editoi of the Herald:
" Permit me through the columns of
your paper to express my sincere thanks j
to those ladies and gentlemen who, by |
their unremitting attention and many acts |
of kindness toward my wife and myself
during the former's recent illness, have!
placed me under great obligations to j
them. "I would also take this opportu- j
nity to state to the ladies of Ti tusville
and vicinity that I will continue in the
millinery business, and shall endeavor to
keep a much more complete assortment
of goods than heretofore. I propose to
offer every novelty and variety that the
seasons can produce at the lowest market
prices.
"CHARLES E. TRACY."

Of Grant as Presidential candidate the
Virginia City (Ncv.) Enterprise (Hep.)
says:
"Were he now in his vigor to set him
self to write the history of the last eigh
teen years he might produce something
which would last when Washington's
farewell address would be forgotten.
Were he to decline a third nomination for
the Presidency it would be an act which
would exalt him as man has seldom been
exalted on this planet. It would not on- [
ly impress his countrymen profoundly,
but would in foreign lands give such an
idea of America and Americans as was
never entertained before."
The Toronto Globe , speaking of the de
mand made upon Great Britian for the

which reference is made by President
Hayes in his message, says: "There is
nothing warlike in asking for compensa- |
tion but, on the contrary, something \
laughable in the impudence, with which
our big neighbor demands $10.">,000 for
the flsh which two skippers only hoped
to catch one Sunday afternoon.
