The Evangelical Alliance issues the cus
tomary program for the Week of Prayer,
January 4—lo, 1880, as follows: Sun
day, January 4, sermon on the Fullness
of Christ's Salvation;" Monday, tlmks
giving for blessings of the last year and
prayer for their continuance; Tuesday,
confession of sins and humiliation before
God; Wednesday, prayer for the Church
of Christ, its ministers, its growth in
grace and its enlargement, and for revi
vals of religion; Thursday, prayer for
Christian education, for the family and
institutions of learning, for Sunday-
Schools and Christian associations; Fri
day, prayer for nations rulers and peo
ple, for peace and religious liberty; Sat
urday, prayer for home and foreign mis
sions.
Of Grant as Presidential candidate the
Virginia City (Ncv.) Enterprise (Hep.)
says:
"Were he now in his vigor to set him
self to write the history of the last eigh
teen years he might produce something
which would last when Washington's
farewell address would be forgotten.
Were he to decline a third nomination for
the Presidency it would be an act which
would exalt him as man has seldom been
exalted on this planet. It would not on- [
ly impress his countrymen profoundly,
but would in foreign lands give such an
idea of America and Americans as was
never entertained before."
The Toronto Globe , speaking of the de
mand made upon Great Britian for the
compensation for interference with Amer
ican Fishermen in Fortune Bay, and to
which reference is made by President
Hayes in his message, says: "There is
nothing warlike in asking for compensa- |
tion but, on the contrary, something \
laughable in the impudence, with which
our big neighbor demands $10.">,000 for
the flsh which two skippers only hoped
to catch one Sunday afternoon.
A woman calling herself Queen of Cure
is doing an enormous business in South
west, particularly among the negroes.
ne rides in a discarded circus chariot,
wearing velvet and spangles, and accom
panied by a band of music. She has the
reputation among the credulous of posses- i
sing miraculous power of healing and i
multitudes flock around her wherever she
goes. She makes no charge for her serv
ices, but sells vast quantities of lini
ment to which she ascribes i. arvelous
curative qualities.
