AN ARTIST'S IMPRESSION
In the above Illustration the artist gives a very Rood idea of a recent Zeppelin. The latest are reported to have
guns mounted on various platforms at different positions. It is generally believed that the disaster to the Zeppelin
which fell near Heligoland some little time before the war broke out was due to the ignition of gu from the flash
of the gmi which was then being experimented with. The gun was reported to have bees osonnted on the npper
portion of the main body of the Zeppelin. Whother a Zeppelin would feel quite comfortable with so much cloud
about as Is suggested in the drawing Is not quite certain. It bs known that during the long runs made by ZeppeUas
before the war they were shepherded by constant wireless reports as to the weather ahead of them.
With the usual meteorological messages from Englaud and America cat off from Germany the planning of the
Zeppelin raids must be rendered more difficult. Some surreptitious messages may get through, but In plotting oat
weather charts one desires the maximum number of reports.
ARAB AND TURK.
The Fierce Enmity Between Them l»
Both Racial snd Political.
Aside from their political differences,
tlm enmity between the Arab RJJ<I the
Turk Is proverbial -n racial, deep root
ed enmity which the new regime In'
stead of overcoming or. at least, tem
pering has brought successfully to a
head. And still the effendl of Con
stantinople refers to the son of the des
ert as "that dog of an Arab,'' and stlli
the desert Arab, who will rime even
on his way to Jtihannom, pours out his
hatred and contempt in couplets Uke
this:
Three things naytrht but evil work—
The locust, tire vermin and the Turk.
There is such a thing as the fatality
of hate, which seems to be a part of
the cosmic scheme. Indeed, some peo
ple ore born to hate each other and the
sooner they know It the better. The
Young Turk, for instance, when he can
neither knife nor poison nor 'lespoll an
Arab aspiring to power, will invite him
to Stamboul and make him a pasha—
that is, a sublime porte Instrument of
murder and plunder.
That is why the Arab chiefs as well
as the leaders of thought in Syria and
Egypt have always resisted these bale
ful seductions, for to the Arab, whose
pride and magnanimity are those of
the barbarian, the patrlarchial rule of
Ibn tir-Rashid of Nejd or the theocratic
government of the sherif of Mecca,
with all Its open air tyranny and
justice, Is far better than tbe stato
era tic abominations of Constantinople.

VANISHED HAPPINESS.
It Wasn't Appreciated Until It Began
to Disappear.
Long, lingerlngly, languishlngly, he
looked at the photograph In his hand.
Tears gathered in his handsome eyes
like crowds about a scoreboard.
"Is it too late? Is there no hope foi
me?" he questioned himself as he look
ed at the likeness with longing languor.
"Have I waited too long?"
The lovely face in the photograph
gazed back at him.
Greedily he drank in the trusting ex
pression. |
"I did not appreciate you while I had
you!" he cried to It. "Oh, is there yet
time? Is there yet time?"
With the picture still in his hand, he
staggered to the mirror.
There was no doubt of it. The large
bald spot in the center of his head was
still spreading.
"Oh, why did I not take care of It
While I had it?" he moaned, and again
his eyes fell yearningly on the picture
of himself taken seven years before.—

FINANCE
CANADIAN PACIFIC ONLY
FEATURE OF THE MARKET
A Two-point Advance Remits From
Yesterday's Declaration of Regular
Dividend The Leading Shan*
Again Move Contrarily
Mir
By Auoriatgd Press.
New York, Fob. 9.—A two-point ad
vance in Canadian Pacific, resulting,
from yesterday's declaration of the reg
ular dividend, was the only noteworthy
feature of to-day's early and somewhat
irregular etoek market. Leading
shares again moved contrarily, United.
States Steel, Amalgamated Copper and
Union Pacific scoring slight gains, while
Heading and Southern Pacific were
fractionally lower. National 'Lead m
the strongest of the specialties, gaining
two points, while Federal Mining pre
ferred lost as much. Trading became
more active, with a strong undertone
at the end of the first half hour.
The optimistic views of the president
of tihe United States Steel Corpora
tion on the foreign trade situation,
coupled with another break in exchange
on London, were factors in the general
rise which followed the early trading.
Aside from Canadian Pacific, however,
none of the leaders gained as much as
a point. Bethlohem Steel continued to
rise, despite adverse dividend pros
pects. Sudden selling of New York
Central at a decline of 2 points devel
oped at mid-day. Bonds were easy.
