IS THERE A DEVIL? Text. "Jeeua rallh. Gat the* hence. Batan."— Matt IT, 10. I was asked a short time ago. "Do you believe In the devil?" My Inter rogator looked at me aldewise and laughed—just a quiet, tolerant laugn. such as you would give when you ask ed a child IT he thought tbe earth was 'flat. I answered. "Yes. I never felt sur er." "Why. 1 thought the devil wa* dead —that that wu# an e*ploded theory. I don't believe." snid he, "in a person with hoofs and horns, pitchfork and tall. I think It is Just an abstract principle of evil at v.ork-not a person, but a personification, just as there Is a San ta Clans, but there isn't. Don't you see. preacher?" Frank Is u clever young lawyer, likable and convincing, and he laughed again with the "now you surely see It" expression he uses to a Jury. Well, lie may be right or he nmy be wrong. I confess I'm not in a position to give any authoritative statement as n matter of personal ex perience. I WHS ttlwnys taught to be lieve there was and have tried to keep as clear of his direction as possible. The Bible mentions lilin as "Satan" or tbe "devil" again and again. 174 times altogether in both Old and New Testament. Christ siwaks of him as a real being, lie either wits deceived or de< civiim I'd hate to ttilnk either. In no other case (lid Christ sepm to luck intelligence or lie ignorant of men tal. moral or spiritual things. The Devil'* Photo. If there Is no devil we me sure of this- that there Is some person or souie hirKr Unit acts among nud upon and influences men much as the orthodox devil was supposed to in the good days when men apparently lolliid it easier to believe. If there Isn't a devil we must tulnilt iliai the devil's work some how gets done, atiil thoroughly done. I believe that my lawyer friend Is right as to the description Our conception b wrong iiliout that If I were to ask you. my readers, to draw a picture of the devil tin tbe margin of this news paper I suppose practically all would depict him in medieval fashion witli horns ami tail I think we have ma liciously maligned the devil. The Bi ble says something about his appear ing as "an angel of light." Look out for his makeup. He hasn't angular eyebrows or pointed mustache, nor | does he wear a red suit A Gentlemanly Devil. The devn as a devil never tempted j a soul. Vou couldn't tempt a man lo' drink by showing him a wretched J home. rugs, bloated face, diseased body, hut by gilded surroundings and exhil-. aration of a pleasant stimulant. -Hoi comes in the KUise of a friendly strung- i er. fcle was never so iiflabie. so relinetl. j so cultured, so faultless in manner. Iu daylight he Is seldom out of good com pany. Drive Idui out of the church at one door, he puts on a different coat and comes in at another lie will laugh at your jokes, weep at your sorrows and lie like the devil. He tells a young fellow that he can "drink or let it alone." He tells a girl that flirts with a stranger that she's quick and can outwit any one He's a good deal more watchful nt a dance than the chaperon. He tells a bus.ness man adopting tricky methods tli t lie needn't tear; he's still safe, still "legal honest." He comes so insidiously that we can scarcely dis tinguish him from our iikental opera tions He Is np to date The twenti eth century devil may lie a mean, de moralizing. drMilitating habit of doubt ing: a sneering, seotllng mood: a cyni cal spirit which derides the virtue it cannot attain and the goodness it can not understand He conies when our desire is strongest and our resistance weakest. He came to Kve when she was curious, to Ksau when he was hun gry, to David when his desire was i-'trongest. to I'eter when be was fright ened iu strange surroundings, to our l.ord when lie was weakened by forty days' fast. The Master Craftsman. The devil Is alert. He passes a hun dred gates and finds oue unlatched. He claims all seasons as his own. He doesn't lay oil' in winter, like the brick layer. nor take a vacation in summer, like tile preacher. He hasn't found the joy of tbe eight hour day. like the union man, lior the kill time skill of the government employee, but he works all the time without extra pay for overtime. lie is busy Saturday nights, although he doesn't miss any other nights. He Is principal of the street night school, where so many boys and girls get their education. No devilV Just fight him for a week and seel He is a great general. If he can't use artillery he'll try cavalry: If not cavalry, infantry He'll attack your lower nature with submarine, your higher with aeroplane. He is a strate gist. Knows every trick in warfare. Will sometimes sham defeat It dis organizes a regiment to see tbe enemy flee. Victory things reaction. You think you have mastered Satan He leads you into an ambush. In one careless hour yon lose, because you won the first hour. His great word Is "tomorrow." The master stroke of the devil, be lie real or imaginary—Christ said he was real—ls'his ability to con vince that wrong Is right, self decep tion. and that he does not exist. He has already defeated the man who says so. There are fifty ways of put ting out a fire, but to deny that there Is a fire Isn't one of them. Radium at tha Big Exposition.
