Once again the Young Men's Chris
tian Association. Second and Locust
streets, will conduct an entertainment
course made up of superior attractions;
in fact, from the Lyceum standpoint,
ail the members are considered to be
j high-class. The opening attraction
' will mark the first appearance in this
j city of Miss Lucile Landers, of Boston,
a noted dramatic reader; her program
also to include folk songs. Miss Lan
ders is said to be one of the best prod
ucts of the Hub and is highly endorsed i
by Leland T. Powers, from whose j

Construction of the plant, costing \
$250,000, has been started ami when
it is completed it is expected the Cam- !
bria Steel Company will furnish 1,500 j
and I,SOO gallons of benzol daily.
Benzol, a by-product of coke, is used j
in softening rubber. Until the Euro- •
pean war broke out it was obtained at I
only a,few points in the United' States, 1
most of the product being imported !
from Germany. With that source cut!
off, the price of benzol has doubled, i

announced the death in San Diego, |
Cal., Saturday night of Henry W. Put-j
nam, a multi-millionaire, - ho made the
foundation of his fortune in a little fac
tory on North street.
Mr. Putnam came to Bennington
from New York in 1864 and establish
ed a plant for the manufacture of
clothes wringers, 'he made noval
ties. and as his capital increased, be
came interested in other enteritises in ,
New York and Philadelphia.
