club brings` the farther together' s'
mind in contact t wit
mind, and thus shaipens and polishes.
The life of the farmer is peculiarly an
Isolate one Ile does not come in con
tact with 1,1- fellow-men enough; and,
...oust (turn tly: is apt to be a litti6 rough
iu his manners, and a little slow, not
to e;ay rusty, in his mental operations.
Let them meet once a week or once a
fortnight during the long winter even
ings, and discuss any agricultural topic;
and it is wonderful to notice hash mualt
wore active their minds become, and
wb'at an Influence the discussions have
on their farm management. Two heads
are always wiser than one, and three
heads are wiser than two. A inarktv who
seldom or never ,compares ndt s with
Lis neighbors is apt to become once
led—to think that he knows It- 11, ana
that wisdom will die with him ;
that he has the best' stock, the brat
mode of clivation, and the best crops.
But let hi come into a farmers' club,
and the conceit Will be taken out of him.
He will find' that others know a thing
or two, and in sena matters are alto
"; 1; gether his superlo ; and, if he• is not
such a fool that h s; conceit cannot be
pounded out, he will learn something,
and be stimulated , to make improve
ments.
Another advantage of the club is,
that farmers will not only learn to
think, but learn to talk. It is one
thing to think, lind another to be able
io express our thoughts in clear, con
cise, and intelligent language. Par
tners are good thinkers, but are pro
verbially poor talkers, simply because
they have little practice. In a club
composed of their neighbors, where the
subject of talk is one with which they
are familiar, their learn to
• Open their
mouths and express, themselves with
clearness and- force. In this' respect
the club'dnes rorktmers what thie 'ly
ceum does for lawyers; and it Is an ad
vantage not to be lightly esteemed by
those who wish to see the agricultural
• .
community eterting its due share of
influence in society. This capacity for
talking exerts a reflex intim* on
thought ; for intno position is a nan's
mind moreitotive than when he rises
to speak belore.an assemblage of his
fellow-men. ..11 his faculties are not
palsied through fear, his thoughtaglide
now in this three — Lion, now in that, as
rapidly an 4 gracefully as a skilled ska
ter moves over stnaoth ice; and with ai
little apparent
. effort. But this skill
,comes only by practice. The skater
makes awkward movements when he
makes his first attempts.
Good neighborhood is, promoted. by
the farmers' club. When • men work
atone all day and stay at home all the
evening their sympathies with their
neighbors hare little opportunity for
play, and they are apt to become sel
fish, sometlmestktitt ticherish a pre*
morbid jealousy. But let them meet In
the club, talk over their successes and
failures, and,,eur ward for It, they will,
be drawn to. Ward each othsr,"agetiertniti
emulation will be excited, and they
will learn to rejoice in each other's
welfare.
We speak of what Wehave Seen when
we talk of farmers' clubs. For more
than a - dozen years we have hien-Con
nected with one, and have noticed Its
effects. The agrieultuit of th‘commn
nity has greatly improved, Tore?gh
bred stock and more perfect art:trim
pletnents hate been, introduced, the
brains as well farms of the mem
bers of the club have been cultivated,
and when one of the number has been
sick all have been 'ready to' render a
helping band, and when one has died
the widow and orphans have , not been
neglected. .. . •
The organization of a ;clubl need. not
be complicated. The mere siniPle the
better. A president and' tieeretarY,' 11 #
0 they are live men, are all the officers
required; and these orneera ahould •ro
tate annually, and be considered as ivor-‘'
thy of the ambition of the farmeras the
presidency of the totintr'agricriltaitit
society. The meetings can be held in
one central place, or circulate from
house to house. Tiplatterlipreferable,
as itgives an opportunity to examine
the farms and stock Ett,the nientliint;
but is liable tothls objection, that the
ladies are wontto overdo in the matter
of hospitality. Let every member feel
that the success of. the oluh , depends,
upon his individual efforts, and It will
succeed, no matter what ma0 1 ,.14 the
