AGRICULTURE.
Hoar to Improve a Farm
Many 'ai! r faraterii spend money free
ly In purchasing manures-guano,super.
nbesphates, Woe dust,. .gypsum, etoi,
sod they reulizs a. profit by it. I do not
wish to Eitly one word to discourage them
from a conffittiatice of the practice; but
would advise them to be a little more
vareful In their'experirnents and stalls-
If a farmer puts a hundred dollars
worth ,of either of those special ma
unit's, or any other manures that drain
his pocktitOf the dollars, he should be
able to ascertain that-he gets his money
flack with a profit on It of at least twen.
EV per cent. to pay for his labor and
risks. He can only ascertain this by
cultivating a measured part of the same
iteld without manure of any kind, giv
,Goi the same care and attention as the
perOon inlihurea. After he shall
have done this and measured or weigh:
rd the crops, a little arithmetic- will
brlogout the facts; there should be no"
guess work- or hope's° about - It:
717 a merchant invests a perthiin of his
capital in any description of goods he
will know when these goods are dile.
Posed of, whether he has gained or lost
by the operation ; 'if the speculation has
,been unsuccessful ye drill seek some
u tiler invest tn'eht far. hie eapttal. To be
successfurhirmer i lt requires as , , much
shrewdness that-of a 'merchant or
any other pursuit In life.
Now,lrotherfarmers, allow me here
to be a little critical. You will ac
knowledge that there ie no manure
that\you can buy, that- will give such
satsfactory results as the manure made
to your own barn-yards. Will italways
bring the answer—wet season, or dry
season?," Yes; then, why do . you not
niake more of it ? or, why do you not
take better care of what you do make?
I have seen sotne of your manure heaps
levelled out to feather edge, which edg
es should have been shoveled up into a
evinpact heap, so as to expose as small
'• a surface.as possible rain and sunshine.
TheSe remarks will apply us well to
your milking and feeding yards as to
the main manure heap. '
. Collect all the vegetable matter from
every nook and corner of the farm
that your stock will not eat, and incor
porate it with the manure heap, or,
with swamp lime and gypsum form a
eompost heap, collect leaVes from the
V,
N cid& which contain lure potash than
many of the phosphates in the market.
e`orlt over this compost heap once or
twice in the course of Et. year, and top
dress your lamUwith It. Leave a strip
across the field mot so top dressed, and
if "boolc farming", will not satisfy you,
yob will begin to learn by "example."
To do this work will require labor,
and labor cats money ; labor is always
worth money when well directed and
' properly applied. By pursuing this
course, you accomplish two purposes—
you improve the appearance as well as
enrich the farm,
I would direct attention first, to mak
ing and saving all the manure that can
be made by collecting and applying to
the manure or compoSt heap every spear
of vegetation that is growing on the
farm'; this, you will soon find, will pay;
then buy as much of the fertilizers as
may prove themselves to be profitable
by the tests aboved named.
The Introduction of so much labor-
saving machienry into the farming
system is, I fear, making our farmers
little lazy, and they would rather takes
hundred dollars out of their pockets to
buy fertilizers than do the extra work
of collecting the material and making
compost, as they consider this a little
out of the regular routine of farming;
but they may is well hire labor to do
this and secure the profit to themselves,
us to spend their ;money abroad and
give the profits to others ; this, too, will
keep the laboring men in their own
neighborhood ;• a class that ought to be
eucouragetiby constant and well-paid
employment; productive labor being
the foundation of national success.
?lowing down red clover is one of the
•cheapest and quickest methods of
im
proving farm land. This plan cannot
be too often, nor too strongly urged on
the farming community. I have tried
and seen It tried by others often, and
alivays with success. The best time to
do this is when in full bloom, and the
seed about commencing to form. Not
only the green crop plowed under, but
the roots enrich and mellow the soil,
putting it in good condition for the re
ception of any crop.—American Stock
Journal.
YANKEE AfiLK.—They have at Wor
eeqter, Massachusetts, a "Milk Manufac
tory." In a recent case in the Police
Court there, 'Lyman H. Whipple was
arrested, and the Worchester Oazette
rays : lie has had a place of business on
Pront street, and employed two or three
hands In his "milk factory," who ap
peared as witnesses against him, They
state that he has a room fitted up with
great tank or can, holdinglBogallons,
into which the good milk is put, but
ttiat every time It Is filled forty gallons
of a mixture of burned molasses, chalk,
Fait, and water Is put In, and the Whole
in mixed together and sold as genuine
country milk. The business has been
thus conducted for some time, all the
customers receiving their share of the
"milk," except a few who furnished
small cans to be filled, with the milk of
one cow, for children. The doors of the
establishment were kept looked, and
the business was conducted In as pri;
vote a manner as possible. The exam
ination resulted In finding 'Whipple
guilty on both charges—of keeping and
selling---and he was fined fifty dollars
and costs on each complaint, which he
paid and departed.
It.was a very hard-shell Baptist of,
Tennessee, who • suggested, when he
heard of the reformation of an ungodl
neighbor, that no ordinary haptient,
would do for that man—the only sure
way would he to tie a grindstone to his
and-"artohor Mtn over night in the
middle of The river."
