WItAT I KNOW ABOUT CALVES.
In these days of telling each othe,
what we I; now, f will try to tell what I
know, in the way of not having to wear,
calve. It id pretty generally nude,-
stood that Paddy knows the habits of

reasons. The plan of the Irish Lord is
to keep Pat always a tenant at will;
hence Ite 6 often compelled to live on.

sow. Pat onec said to me that a cow
shouPl /lacer ate her eaV. 'Why so? If
she nee' it tt.).l lioka, and itis allowed
to such, it is then harder to learn it to
drink. The mother becomes attached
to it, and ‘i betrthlea away, she mourns
for a long time, during which she, re
fuses to glee ,:own her milk, which is
feverish atol unfit for use.. This seem

ti so vet y leasouable th ' t I decided to
adopt the } ion One rial convinced
me that it is the true pl u to save the
trouble of weaning calves and to keep
the mother quiet and in good condition
after dropping her calf. When -the
now drops the calf, throw a cloth over
it and curry it away out oiler sight find
hearing- She wile then not hnotti !she
had a oaV. Milk the cow and offer the
milk to the eAlf, and it will drink at
onee, eimply because it ,does not have
to unlearn the habit of sucking. If a
_elf should drcp in the night, then re
move it as quick as possible in the
morning, out of Bight, and treat as di
: e:ted. Tying up the calf and feeding
it three times a day, is better than twice,
as all young animals require food often.
I ever_ after adopted Paddy's plan
while I kept cows, or a cow, and would
always do it whether I intended to kill
or raise tho mires, If I had fifty or a
hundred head. Those I named it to,
and who have tried it once, are so well
convinced of its many advantages that
they cannot be induced to the "old
fogy" plan of allowing their calves' to
run with and suck, the mother three:or
four weeks, and then have another
week's trouble and noise after the
calves are taken away.—Correvontiont
of the Country Gentleman.
A NEW AND INTERESTING DIET FOB

Schwartz, It appears, had read year
ago in some old Sweil6h muck mantis
that horse dung, mixed with other pr..

as a feeding-material for cow stock, ammo
noticing, that a certain short-horn bull
even after a heavy meal would frequon

corner of the farm yzird,sit-struck him
that it might be well to give so palate
ble an article of desert a systematic
trial as a condiment, if notpiece de re

sbries of experiments with the new
food, andso satirfactory was the result,
that he ended by feeding his cow stock
daily as Much as eight ponnds , per head
of it, along with the split peas. He
found that dung had a favorable effect
on the amount of butter in the Milk,
and peas on that of ca r .eiti. The cattle,

however, are stubborn things, and Mr.
Schwartz, thanks' to the introduction
of the new feeding material, has even
found it possible, on the same acreage
(thirteen hundred acres) to kpep twen

formerly able to do and still adhered to
his rule of giving them all through the
year as much food as they will cat.—
The loss which the land sustains in

The opinion is also expressed that
even_a large addition to his herd might
be made by a still larger use of the new
