THE CONCERT.—In common with our fellow citizens and eitiaszieiseis-whd • - pald'their door-foes, we attended the concert given as per advertisement of last week. Not having a.dead head ticket, wo went prepared to criticise or com mend, eel° us seemed Just; and, on the whole, irss, arainolined to eommend—kt least ltho vocal part of the performance. The voice] were good, the pieces were well rendered, and wo have eel &fin heard a sweater soprano than the Alleghe nian& can boast.. As regards • the ibelliringingi the less said the better.-' It - was fair for beginners: but we have never heard a troupe save thii.sorig inal "Swiss Bell'Ringers 4 who could entertain an audience respeetably with "the bells." We no. tired, with regret, the inevitable Yankee feature of advertising in this performance, as we have noticed it before in concerts, oirctissev, and with humility be it spoken—religions gatherings. In this instance it took tile torm of a placard, stuck on the really well played cabinet organ, ;to tilt: ‘!Tnia OnaAN ion SALE." -Wo suggest that, at the next concert, this ticket be taken from the organ and posted on the "bells." at tins as Not that we glamlile: not at all: we have an ear for Eineie---two hi fact—arid have; performed to limited audiences before now with applause,— on tho jews harp and month organ. But the concert was given underihb . auspices of the allermain Society," and in regard to this we have a word to say: This society inaugurated—the past winter—a series of lectures that, we venture to say, was more successful thaw any enterprise of the kind in a vill age . of this size befizeen Maine and Texas. Much of th'.s success was owing to the shrewed management of the business ootnmittoe, and not a little—we say it without flattery—to the superior intelligence and appreciative ability of our peo ple. As we print the leading paper in this sec tion and have first class facilities for job work, the committee naturally gave their advertising work to this offtoe ; and we tried to give satisfac tion in work and prices. The record will show that we did the work at about' half the rates charged by such offices throughotit'this'region.— n addition, our Local editor attended the leo tures every time, arid wrote extended notices, which were suffioiently able_ td win attention and commendation from leading papers beyond the 'tint infamies of the Society.: tat it bo remembered that these were not dead head notices, each, editerThilving a' Belot; ' duly Paid for, and "good for the season." Nor did we look or care for, the quettomary oifer of a eon:TN dentary ticket for the Man who was expected to write notices of the lectures. But a cordial and generous appreciation tit 'out eiforta to forward the enterprise would have been more grateful than the almost daily fault-finding and caviling with which we were entertSiitted.;:r We wore constantly faulted and accused of ,"over charging, when wo were charging less than any similar office in _northere,,Pcnnsylvania for ;the same class of work, and we fully ,believe , that, beside all this, we donated to the SobietY more than those who were so over officious. We do not greatly care about this; but we wish the pub : lie to understand jn4 how nuich, loundation there' was for the impression whielkwas sought to be conveyed, that we wore exorbitani, in Our char ges : that wo were aetdated in every transaction by greed of gain, and that cntr_course was narrow, and soetariaic This was rho . . hapoin whioh, the small change of village-s candal eonatantly xeaoh ed us, and we beard very frequently that the Ag itator was to change hands : that M. 11. Cobb was to Mere and take charge of this—oianoth or paper, We should harp weloomed hits 1 .5'; ldr he has abilities that few men care ,to waste on a country paper, and his coming would have been garn to the county—and loss to himself.— We happen to know thathis heart goeti out ,te c , the wooded bills, green valleys, and purling streams of this mountain land with a poet's We; but ho will hardly return. In view of the earn est work and Unyielding integrity'which';infirked his course hero, we judge , that ,ho -found Tioga ()aunty like Micawber's coals—" not remunere tive." In the first place, he gave" away the price of a good farm in gratuitous printing. No man in the tounty ever did so, muck for ,a; party, find got so littlb in return, Ile did not oompleiti'Of this ; but, when ho stood up with stiff back and unbending knees for Principle, while political hack's were trimming foreffice, many of his friends .—whe, should have known and done better—went very looso on him ;—and this was gaiikng. hosides.vrliat ho freely gave, he - was *waged outt• of more printing than he could afford to lose.— But: the worst of all, was the inordinate boring to which,he was subjected. Being a 'good na tured soul, sensitive about giving offense, bo was a standing mark fur every dullard who bad a ' grievance; and the way these tiresome souls were %vont to twist their moral pod-augers into his mental serenity, was painful. Ile told us so last summer—or words to•that effect—and added, "It is getting almost as bad here - in Philadel phia." Perhaps, when he is bored out of the latter place, ho will return to Wellsboto.
