DECORATION DAY.—This day is be
ing accepted—very rightly and properly—as a.
national holiday.. Our exchanges' come laden'
with particular" and lengthy descriptions of the
ceremonies observed on that day, and of the high
honors bestowed on the memories=of men who
died that the nation might live. In many lasge
towns the day seems to hove taken rank as hardly
second in importance to Independence Day. • We
should like to lint it on record that' this village,
second to none in loyalty during l our dark days,
was among the first in point of doing honor to
our dead soldiers , on Decoration Day. But the
:truth must be told': the....4emonstration was far
from being what it should b - dv -been—what we
trust it will be in future years.
A respectable audience gathered at the church;
there was a prayer by Rev. Mr. Calkins, a well
worded address road by Dr. Buck, and some very
genial end spirited remarks by Rev. N. L. Rey
nolds; after which the crowd quietly dispersed.
Many went to the, cemetery, 'and, flowers were
placed on the soldiers' graves therein. But the
affair lacked the spirit and impressiveness of si
milar ceremonies at the South over the Confede
rate dead. There they keep the day with th'
most intense feeling and enthusiasm; there
entire population turns oat; all business is sup
pended; bands of music, followed by companre
of young girls dressed in white crape and laden'
with flower wreaths, visit and decorate the grayee
of their soldiers. All show that they feel the
solemn significance of the occasion.
Captain Niles, who has been an eye witnese of
