One of the most singular featnrea- or
this " forest" is, that every stoneltrunk '
is broken across . transversely, and at,
every break the end is not so smoothes
if sawed, but more smooth than a trunk
broken in its vegetable condition mild
be. i The wood had certainly turned
into stone, - or been replaced by stone be
fore : the trunk broke. , 'But the pieces
are, usually short, not Wore than two or
three feet long, and the atone is strong ; 1
a piece tWeive or fifteen feet in length,
supported at the ends ; would probably
not break by its own weight. We do
not know that any person has broken •
these trunks by design, and we have "
ini way of explaining the fractures ex
cept by supposing that the trunks were
petrified while upright, and were after
wa'rd broken by failing.
Major Snyder informs us that 'while
he, was Superintendent of the Buena
Vista Vinicultural company, a piece of
petrified tree, about sixteen inches thro , /
and two feet long, -with eanare ends,
was found above the will/et:eller, which
is cut into tufa ; and -- On the adjacent
vineyard of Mr. Gundlach a similar
piece was found. From the Buena Via.
ta tract to. the petrified forest, the/dis- .
cane°, In a direct line, is probably 25
miles, so that the petrifaction of large
trees and the peculiar fractures'are not
4 confined toe small space: / ,
The tree was probably redwood. The
stone splits better than' the common
white oak, and the grain is closer than
sonic, fir which we have looked at; and
the, trees are too large for any other.-ge
nus growing in the neighborhood save
the 'sequoia., In the largest tree we
counted ten rings of annual layers 'of
wood, within an inch, near the heart,
and twenty-eight rings near theoutside.
The rings grow thinner as the diameter
of the tree increases. Several weeks
ago we copied an account of the find
ing of two lizards in these petrified
trees, the idea being conveyed that the
lizards bad been surrounded by solid
stone ever since the petrifaction occur
red. We are satisfied that there is no
good foundation for such an idea ;.and
thrit lizards bad crawled into cracks of
these petrified trees within a short time,
just as they do Into crevices of any
rock that gives them a convenient shel
ter Instead of living for 100,000 years,
these little reptiles had . probably cele
brated not more than" one anntversary
of their birtilday. The petrified forest
is an important fact, and the world will
probably hear rouOh morel of it from
!mimed men:—Alta
