WAI4'OI4IAN.---The trout are in sea
:on, and in condition ; never better. Also, they I
•ro more plenty than usual; owing in part to the
bsence 01. aatne, which, being of no ,use,• have
eon . suffetril to wash and' wear away, leaving
he strewn free for anything from a minnow to
porpoise. Of course, the - datus being gone, the
.1d trick of catching thern in baskets as they fell
.ack from an unsuccessful leap, is.impractioable.
ity . l • It Must be rare sport to bold a basket on
ho end of a ten foot polo and see a largo trout
rop into it,' every minute or two.- Wo could
amo Orie person who caught halt a bushel of
.ne trout in about an hour, by this !port/manlike
.;ethod—and we wish he had broken ,both his
ags in the Operatio'n. The new law, also, is
yelping tho matter materially. No lout, who
shes for profit, can come hero to net and salt
Yawn trout for market, or catch tubs and pails of
hem to carry off.
What we capeoially need now is an. organiza-.
ion; a company founded on common seniePrin
iples, for tho protectir of game and fish. It
.eed not be expensive Pr cumbersome; the fewer
nd more simple its by-laws, the better, so that
hey he effeotive. And .it is of espeoial impor
tance that peoplo who live on or near the trout
streams be induced to join•the club, It is par
icularly for their interest to do so. Living he
,• and the reach of a daily market, it is of more
- ntereilt to them that the_streams be well stocked
with fine trout, and it is — no,small privilege to
aVO a supply of such food within five or ten
..inutes' walk of one's, door. Those living on a
alma can'always, if they choose, more readily
detect infractions of the law, and would naturally
bo the first I t‘o make complaint. 'A fearless com
bination to enforce the laws, with a few vigorous
i proseeutions of those who insist on the right to
I" fish'when and where they please," would do
the business. Law breaking is not gallant or
commendable. Paying "$5 each for every trout
so taken," turns a "lucky day" into a day - of se
' rious disaster.
