.31r. Van Gelder:—ln looking ai l tho outside of
your paper while tho'inside is still white, I see
your compositor has changed the shirt of "Nes.
sus" to the shirt of "Nemesis"—a very grave
mistake, when it is considered that Nessus was a
giant, of the male persuasion, and. not particu
larly given to virtue, while Nemesis was a beau
tiful goddess, the very "personification of the
moral reverence for 'lair, of the natural fear of
committing a culpable eaten, and hence Of con

hence got her shirt mixed up, in his mind, with
that of the Centaur, Nessus. Yours, somewhat

NECKTIE SoorAßLb,—Thera was a
"neck-tic party" at the house of Dr. Shearet on
Tuesday evening, 4th inst. It was a pleasant
affair, and conducted with good taste on the part
of hilt and guests. At a neck-tie party -they
always provide a paper bag, in which the femi
nine portion of the " audience,"d and young,
short and tall, are expected to de posit specimens
of their respective drosses, made up into furbe
lowed thing. -With a wing on each side. The
male element goes fur the ba k g, and each man or
boy draws therefrom a speoiki . i, which' he is in
honor bound to wear " conspicuous," and 'also to
attach himself to the particular piece of calico
corresponding to his ticket, for the evening.—
When it came to the drawing, "Items" went for
the bag with a confidence inspired by a know
ledge that be is sale to win ilt any chance game
that has null:Laney in it, or wiiere' i'he' prize Las
to be given Up by, the winner. 'Of course he was
not surprised at 4rawing the best looking piece
of calico in thoroved. The party,w9o,4
with a neat collation, and all wentlionialn good
humor with theuiSolvea and with each other.
The sociable was gut up for the benefit of the
Baptist, society, as was the one which Came off at
the house of Mr. Dowen the previous week. The
receipts at the hitter were 516; of the one at
