plain esatement of the foots in the matter.
On. Friday evening, the 10th instant, during a
conversation between Rev. 'W. P. Omens and
some of the gentlemen who .to names appear on
the following contract, the' qUeition was asked,
"'Why are such. and sch. men pot converted?" .
And the elder's answer' was, "because 614 will
net hang on," or, in other words,- "they, leave
the house of God before x get half • thrOugh pros.
citing." ' Then the suggestion was made that
those reenfAnmbering about'ten, of the toughest
cases in town, should attend meeting regularly,
for a certain number of nights, under the preach

contract was gotten up and signed
" Good for fourteen consecutive nights, under
tho preaching of Elder Omens, and others, at
the Union church, in Knoxville, commencing on
Monday evening, February 20, and to follow the
Elder's directions, Eaoh to forfeit, to the Elder,
ten dollars per night for his voluntary Absence.
The Elder to light and warm the house, and fur
nish the best of accommodations. None to speak

religion. On the other hand; we have entered
into this novel araangement,hoping and praying
that wo may bo benefited- by it and " brought
to light" in the Christian's

Potter and M'Kean counties, and we rather ex
pect that, through him, we shall be "noticed"
In the papers of those counties, and perhaps
more conspicuously than we desire.
We aro aware, friend Agitator, that this is ra
ther a queer way of getting up a neries,of meet
ings, sod our only reason for asking you to make
any mention of this matter is, that we- do not
want our friends to think for a pornent that we
arc defying God and, man, dr vietnally

reach us!" This is not the position we occupy.

rich, himself one of the oldest citizens of this
county, sends us the following notice of Joseph
Is.VCortnick,'who lived at. Lawrenceville, in this
,county, as long ago as 1812. Captain Goodrich

cuously in this county in that early day, and adds
