Of all the various occupations and
professions'which have engaged the at- ,
lion -of mankind, there is none that
seems sq pre-eminently useful, so hon.
orable—in short, so compatible with
all our interests, as the cultivation of
the earth...- There is no occupation that
has - so mafy resources within itself, or
which ca furnish, from its own 'means
the \euppli es for all our necessary Wants.

Food, raiment, and luxuries innumer

and care, And -In their train follow s .

by the difficulties and perplexities at
tending the prosecution of mercantile

inducements are held out for them to
engage.lii that profession which, Was
the earliest employment of man; and
which as the light of science is spread
abroad and improvenients are made hi
the art, is becoming morej ateresting,
more profltale, and,-St the Same time,
less laborious? 'With what different
feelings 'do the farmer and the mer

and spirits, goes forth with the first
dawn of day, to his cheerful labors in
the field ; while the other, after a rest
less and perhaps sleepless night, walks,
in a sober mood, to his cotufting-room,
anticipating, with fearful forebodings,
the, insolveney of his customers or the
lill-suceess of a' , venture. With what
'honest p'ride and heartfelt satisfaction
does the farmer look at his luxurious
!fields, his richly laden orchard and his

that has not coveted the happiness and
