CULTURE OF STRAWDERRI Es.--Straw
berry vines require a rich, dry and mel
low soil, and thorough mulching. This
is all that good 'bearing vines need to
produce an abundehee of fruit. Keep
poultry away froul the vines in the for
mer part of the - growing season, as they
will "pick all 'the buds out," and des
tro-y the crop cf fruit. Do not allow a
hoe - nor any other tool that will mutil
ate thp-roots, to.he used near the hills,
until after the crop has been gathered.
Many people have all their strawberries
destroyed by poultry, and by hues; ; t ad
- ,theu lay the failure to the varietyi Let
the gr i nutid be mulched early in the
. Spring, with straw, or - coarse manure,
or anything that will keep the' ground
moist - and prevent the grass and weeds
from growing. Oct the plants from a
bed ; that beats; and the vines will he
sure to yield the fruit. For many sea
sons I t;,ould never raise any strawber
ries, siniply because the hens devoured
all the fi uit producing buds. Straw

will grow and flourish as early as a po

part of the summer require the utmost
care to keep them alive,• by supplying
moisture and shade to protect them
from the scorching . -on. Next spring

SALTING CABBAGE: PLANTS.-A eor
-1 respondent of the ithieric./4 Agricultur
ist considers salt necessay to the devel
opmentof cabbage, especially in places
far from the coast. Helinds them more
crisp, of better flavor, and to keep bet
ter when salt is used, than without.—
He uses it as follows : " A few days
after setting out the plants, and when
they are damp, either after a rain or
when the dew is on, I take email dish
of fine salt and walk among the rows,
sprinkling a little pinch of snit on the
centre leaves 'of each plant ; - when- the
leaves begin to grow, I repeat the salt
ing, and when th 6 centre. leaves begin
to form the head,. I
_apply salt again,
scattering it over the i leaves ; after this
I look it over occasionitlly, and if I find
any plants that do not bead well or ap
pear diseased, I sprinkle the salt over
freely-; this will save all such plabp.—
A quart of salt is sufficient for 500
plants in a season, although more can'
be used with safety.
Here is the latest story •from Paris—a
conversation between two friends on the
Bourse : ' How are you ?' *t as well
as I might be.' So much the worse.=
What have you been doing, that I have
not seen you lately ?" I have got mar
ried.' ,So much the better.' Not at
all, for I have got It coquette for a wife.'
So much the worse.' Not at all, for
her dowry is 300,000 francs." So much
the better.' Not at all, for I risked the
money at play." $o much the worAe.'
Not at all, for I doubled IL' much
, the better.' `Not at all, for my banker
has absconded." So much the worse.'
'Not at all, for my wife has gone with
him.'
THE mqching of young frnit trees is
being practiced to a considerable extent;
but some people commit an error in pltr .
cing the mulch too close around the
trunks of the trees. It should aliVays
be noticed, that the roots of trees gener+
ally, extend laterally to a diameter
equalling that of the height of trees in
their naturui growth and thereforO
mulch, itOorder to be of the most bene
fit, should extend far enough to cover
. .
the roots. Trees that have been set nut
.
but one or , two years, where roots wed
4m setting out cut to a diameter of for r
or five feet, will of course require mulch
ing over an area of more than six or
seven feet in diameter.
Judge Grier, of the U. S. Supreme
Court, Was once trying a case in Penne
Sylvania. A blundering jury returned
an unjust verdict. As the Clerk turned
to receive it, Judge Grier, said ;
Mr. Clerk, that verdict is set aside
by the Court. It may as well be under
stood that in this State id takes thirteen
men to steal a man's fare.' •
An old lady gave this as her idea of a
great man : ' One who is keerful of his
'clothes, don't drink spirits, kin read the
Bible without spellin' the words, and
eat a cold dinner on a wash day with
out grumbling.'
An intelligent gentleman' from Ger
many, on hie fiist visit to an'American
church ; lad a contribution box, with a
hole in the top, presented to him. He
whispered to the,iollector, ' I don't got
mein taper, and cau't vote.'
"Miss," said a high struug swain to 'a
rural dulcinea, "let us walk , yondet

darn the amorous heifers she replied,
"I see enough of them on dad's ,farm."

THIS UNEQUALLED BOOK concerns tho

its cheapness, make it the most desirable of the
legal hand-book. No effort or expense had been
