you to succeed; do you imagine any
good will be done by it? You yourself
may find it easy to lead a virtuous life
without the : assistance afforded by reli

them in the practice bf it till it becomes
habitual, which is the great point of its
security. And Perhaps you are intleht

upon which Yon . uov3 justly value your
self. You might easily display your ex

hazardous subject, and thereby obtain
a rank with our most distinguished au

as among the Hottentots, that a youth
to be raised into the company ofmen,
should' prove his manhood by beating
his mother. I would advise you, there

If men are so wicked with religion,
what would They be without it? I in

One night the train stopped for wood
.`and water at a small station in India:ma.
While this opperatioh wasgoingon, I
served two green-looking countrymen,
in "home-spun," curiously inspecting
the locomotive and occasionally giving
vent to expreSSiOns of astonishmdnt.—.
Finally one of theal lobked up to Me
and said :
"Stranger, are this a l000motive?"
" Certainly. D i iqu't you ever see one
before ?"
"No r havn't never seen one afore.--

"What yer call that you're in ?"
"We call this the cab."

" That's the driving-wheel"
"That big black thing an the top is

1 EXTEMPORANEOUS PREACITING.—In
ne of the lower counties of Maryland
there flourished, in the palmy days of
the " peculiar institution," an old darky
preacher, wholused no:notes, mid prided
himself on his extemporaneous efforts,
His white brethren called him " Doe

course, with ludicrous gravity. At a
camp-meeting which the " Doctor"
was holding, one of
_these friends gave
him, as a text, this paisa,ge in the Psalms
of David : ". - Wake, [psaltery and harp ;
I myself, will arlie.iright early." The
" Doctor" `adjuste , is spectacles, and
read : • ,
" Wake, peaslezt ee a land harp; I my
self will arouse right Early." .
The "Doctor" we lt on to explain,
that 11,foses was a very early riser ; that
he had a peasle-tree which grew near
his window ;, , and that ihe was wont to
rise mighty alrly and hangout his harp
on de peasle-tren, widpsalms.—EDlTOß'S
