EASTER SUNDAY.—Next . Sabbath,
the 17th, rill be Easter Sunday. Thu name is
supposed to be derived from Eastre, the Goddess
of Love, or 'Venue • , o f the North, in loner of
whom a festival was'oelebrated by our Pagan an
cestors in April; whence this month was called
Easter month. Webster • goes on to define the
pretbet Easter as a festival of the ebristian
et:lurch, observed - in commemoration of our Sa
viour's resurrection, and occurring Sunday im
mediately succeeding Good Friday. It answers
to the pascha or passover \ of the Ilebreivs, and
most nations still give it that name. X 3-• Can
any one tell us from whence arose the universal
custom of eating so'sxtaniegg . lf, on Easter Sun
day? We see no possible conhection - between
the object of Abe festival and the manner •in
!Thigh it is celebrated. Indeed, we venture to
lay that it is regarded by two-thirds of our peo—
ple as commemorating.eome remarkable event in
the Shanghai-movement, rather than as a sacred
festival in honor of the Saviour's resurrection.
TRE NEWSPAPER.-11 has been well
laid that the newspaper is a complete reflex of
the "world and its vast concerns ;" but there is
department in it which is so typical of life,
as that devoted to marriages and. deliths.. We
cast our eye carelessly down the oolumn, and we
read that some friend, perhaps a schoolmate, ler
baps a more recent acquaintance, has taken to
himself a wife, and we wish him, long life and
harlSiness. We picture him in futhre years;sur
mauled- by ct bevy of blooming children; and
comforted iu "health and sickness" by the kind
face and loving care of a matronly woman, that
;minds us wonderfully of our mother. •We
rnuso ourselves from I the pleasing re'tery, to
glance at the next paragraph, and read that an
3;•1 and t alued friend has gone to his final at
cocat. We drop a tear to' his memory—think
wt t th sympathetic sorrow of the lonely ones left
behind—and turn to-our daily nvocntion, sorrow
ing and sad. And thus it is,: chants and songs,
and glee of merry ones to -day, will be braken by
wail! tomorrow—for the cod*will be piled on the
breast of some we thought not so near the grave.
Sorrow treads on the heels of joy i songs- are
hushed by the footfall of death ; laughs are bro.
ken rudely; voices, no matter bow musical, are
stilled in a moment,l;—and the newspaper is the
meats of communicating the face (Oho world.
