HERMAIO SOCIETY.—Tide reading by
Mill Susan R.l'reaten, of J3tato . ,Normal School,
Mansfield, before this Societ t i:on Thursday even
leg of last week, attracted a large audience.
When she made her apPearance,'ltere Was' . not a
epare seat in the Court House. The audience
was complimentary certainly, and the selectiopo,
read must have made the hour interesting to all.
Some parts were very well presented. She, had
a good voice,only_ wanting in volume, perhaps,
for such an audience, in such a room. We found
it somewhat difficult to hear where we eat, par
ticularly while some illmannered boys (we think
they must have been boys) were disturbing the
whole audience early in the evening. ;
DONATION.—The gathering at the M.
E. Church in this village, Wednesday evening
last—a donation for Rev. 0. L. Gibson—was a n
agrecabltparty of tho old and young, who made
the evening a pleasant pastime. The'lecturo
room ecrred for 'kitchen and dining room, whilo
the young folks made merry in the rooms up
'stairs. Tho "boys and girls," we inpan.
question is: When will tlitfeld "play" go out
of fashion 1 We guess, as long as there shall ho
e girls and beys," they never will. And why•
should they ? These old tunes, and the same
child-like way of singing thou), melt away the
ice.of years, when we come within reach of the
merry sound, and translate the soul to our 011111
childhood, fresh, pure, sweet with the fragrance
of new life. Let them have their day : They
cannot be boys and girls toollong.
The contributions in cash amounted to some

Other donations have increased this fund to a

money Is circulated among our citizens, and con

fair prospect of doing a good , business. Tho
luniliering business carried on for the petit 20

raise the most of the purchase money to 1)&3- for

the sale of their bay and oats. Had it mkt, been
for the money that our people have realized from'
the lumber trade, they would not bo in ne good
