Ile said; I don't quite understand whether I .am expected to demonstrate au ,ag,ree meht, or a contrariety between these two things. At any rate, if the senti ment is to affirm that one of these pur suits is as delightful and attractive as the other, I respectfully nonconeur.-- [Laughter and applause.] As to city editing, I have had something mere of it than I have desired, and more than I could enjoy. As to my homing, there aro gentlemen who have spoken of, it rather ..more •freely than their limited • knowledge orthe subject Wouldoadmit. [Laughter r ] I t iirik that I' have seen Some elaborate gtatemeuts of the cost Of each turnip—[laughter]--and these statements were made by gentlemen who have not been generally thought so attentive td the cost of things a . ,S these calculations would seem to itnplk. [Laughter.] I have not made any such calculations, for I have been a lit tle shy of doing so. - ' [Laughter.] *, Let me, however, say a few words about country farming, which is a thing I very much believe in, Having done some share of work in the world, I lay down this proposition : That; all men or women who can get their work done by 8 o'clock at night need not consider their condition a hard eec.— When it stretches far into the night -ito 11, 12; 1,2, 3,—it begins to be irk 'some. I findit irksome. I atu not now so fond of sitting up with a newspaper all night 7 - - nor with anybody else.— [Prolonged laughter,] , This, then, I can say for country Chiming; that while it has some \ - rugged aspects, and dries not promise 'any such brilliant and rapid advances to fortune as sonic of our friends like•lo achieve in Wall st., it is just about the safest. and 'crest thing any one can Ongage in ; and it is, moreover, a tranquil and certain do 'light to any human being—who can enjoy his own society. [Laughter and applause.] My little place, while it is nothing to brag of—[laughter]—there is this to be said about it: I have the most delightful barn full of corn, rich, golden corn, that ever you saw in yotir lives. Now, that is something achiev ed, something to look at. I have been at work on the press for forty years; and this seems to be the hardship. You work for days, and' months and years, and what have you to show? Some thing,)hope, in mental groT•th ; some thing .firmness,of purpose; sonic thing clearness of intention, but outwardly? Nothing! Thirty years have passed away, and where , ' is the fruit of : all that labor? How can your labors compare with those of the man who haliproduced a book ? - And f hero let me l say that, in my judgment, no good book ever was or can be p_iOduced on the instigation of a $50,000. check. Such books as that of John Bunyan havo been - ; produced by authors who never thought they would get a . dime for them. [ApplauSe.]-- Those .are the books that live. The books that the $50,000 checks will buy —will they sell? I hope so; but the world is charitable and soon forgets them. Country farming will help also to de velop one of the phases of the question of womans rights—wherein I have not so full a part as some of our friends would wish. Country farming gives just the right field for the development of your energies. [Laughter.] Any number of you aro wanted to take your part in -country farming. [Renewed laughter.] You need not dispute nor clamor there it is. " The world is all before you where to choose." If any lady wants her rights—l am a wood chopper—l an axe and the trees, and give her scope and , verge enough. _There are plenty of oppor tunities ; 80,, then why don't some of our friends who want their rights come out into the country and take them There need be no controversy. Wl4 e , enough is the' world ; and there is work enough for all. I hope that some of this din and controversy will roll itself abroad into work ;"and that our excel lent friend, "-the last, best gift," and so on, will adhieve her rights with her own'right hand. [Great applause.] MAIDEN Busin t terrY.—A good-look ing and honest-faced country girl came to town with her " beau," one day, to do a little shopping. The magnitude of the shop, the piles on piles of goods, the daz zling array of articles, the rows of busy shopmen, quite overpowered our good friend, who scarcely knew what to do. Her " beau" obstinately refused to go in, but loiteredabont the door. The shop men being all busy at the time, the young woman was • obliged to • remain standing for a few moments. At length a dapper fellow with a gob% watch-and chain and flourishing whiskers, came bowing and sniffing up to the bnfiliftil customer, with : "Anybody waiting on you medal:re:" The color deepened on her cheeks as -she hesitated; and drew a Tong breath,- till finally with' a nod of her head towards the door, she faltered out : " Yes, sir, he is."
