urged that they did not, go far enough,
that they did not reach the roots of the

their support from money obtained by'
the raising of tobacco - were under the

" Jeremiah," saidithe, in dis
gust, "The skin waighed than".
it is a well-known fact that no ani
mal is more difilcult to kill than a shark.
One of these monsters of the deep was
captured by the crew of the French clip-,
per "Rossignol," on its last cruise; and
being brought on deck, wasniade fast by
the had and tail. The captain them
upon ordered some of the most experi
enced hands to rip it from the lower
jawbone to the tail with sharp knives,
and to take out its heart r l taiga, liver and
entrails. This dune, it was cast into the
sea again, through which it swain with
so much velocity that in a few seconds
it was lost sight of. Although it could
not possibly live long in this condition,
it apparently swam with as much ; ease
and energy as it did before receiving its
mortal wound.
FELO.NiS ON THE FINGER. Many
persons - are liable to extreme suffering
from felons on the finger. These af
flictions are not only very painful, but
frequently occasion permanent crip-
L pling of the member affected. 'The 4 , 1-
Awing simple Concoction is . recommell
ded as a surecure for the distressing ail
-1 'merit : Take common rock salt, such as
is used for salting down pork and beef,
dry it in an oven, then pound it fine
and mix it with spirits of turpentine in
equal parts. Put it on a rag and whip
it around the thumb, and Af; it gets dry
put on some more, and in twenty-four
hours, we are assured, the felon will be
dehd.
An exchange says it is an extraordi
nary fact in this world that every man
- or wothan that; wants something done
for nothing goes straightway td :the 'pub
lisher of a newspaper. He is the free
bridge over which merit and demerit
. propose to pass tho. stream of trobble.
He is the free hotso that every man
proposes to ride into the green pastures
of prosperity. . .
Not a bad wish was that of the little
Quaker boy, about six years old, who
after all the congregation had for a long
time sat in silence, Stood on his seat,
and folding his arms together said ; " I
wish the Lord would make us all gooder,
and gooder, and gooder, till there, is no
bad left." May his Childish- Prayer be
answered in every reader's heait."
The following story bears internal ev
idence of its truth. At an exaniination
of cadets in Wiesbaden (Nassau) one of
the lads was Asked, 'Where were the
battles of Jena and'Auerstedt fought ?"
Ho answered:' " Our teacher told us
we need not know anything about the
battles in 'which the I' j russians got
licked."
