accord and virtually "tendered L iter services" for
'the summer."

a dog supposed to be rabid, which made an
attack upon a dog belonging to t 4 house last
week. Mrs. Hill and Bliss Lyda Hill were sitting
ini the house, when they were startled by the
ru,h of a doeupon the stoop. Mrs. It writesl
"The dog rushed up the stoop and seized bur
deg, tumbling him about and biting him .the
while. Miss Lydia went to the rescue, and after
a battle forced the strange dog to let go his hold,
when he rushed past her and into the house. We

soon put him out and gave the alarm. In a few
minutes several men with guns were pursuing the
anim I. Air. Hill shot at him but'did not hurt
him much. The dog ran for the mountain nod
took refuge in an old 'house. °Routing him from
this cpver he - Was shot and knocked over as he
Lrek4 for the open-fields ; but he recovered and
made•for the road where Mr. Hill met hint and

knocked him down with a club. By this nue

Mrs. Lovejoy returned from Rome, (not . the

cancer removed from the tower partof her month.
She is now doing well, but has suffered much for
the last few weeks.
Prof. Towner and son, gave a concert ut Parr's
all, Tuesday evening. Mr. Towner has few
iperiors as a singer and teacher of ninsie, and
s son bids fair to. rival the best base soloist in
o country.
Rev. J. F. Calkins held tenehert' examination
here Friday the 23d. Sunday morning nud
evening he occupied the Presbyterian , pulpit, in
exchange with the pastor of that church.
Ira Wells, formerly tanner, and merchant at
this place, was in town the fore part of the week.

We are surprised that "Somebody" in Mims
field should come out in a card, denouncing
Emery's theory, and at the same time expressing
his ignorance to the many readers of the Agita
tor. He says: "In fact, since reading Mr,
Emery's theory and Judge' Edmond's testimony
in the Mander ease, I hardly know it' it is safe to
believe anything." -
Is this the first he has hoard of similar. the
ories?' Ile must be Rip Van Winkle the second,
and is just retaining to a conscious state. If these
theories bring his thinking faculties into requi,
sition, they ha the desired effect.

OBITUARY.—With tiufeigtied
We chronicle the death of J. A, Karr, E4,en
the morning of the 7th inst., at Emporium, Cam
eron county, after a lingering illness.
Mr. Knepp was born in 1835 and was, cow°
quently, at the time of his decease 31 years old
Ho was a native of Tioga county, wo believe of
Lawrence, where his parents reside. As Deputy
Sheriff of this county, and as Commissioners'
Clerk, lie won golden opinions, and will -be re
membered long and favorably by all. Few
young men possess the tact and the capacity for
business which distinguished Mr. Knapp. In his
social relations ho was frank and genial, a Linn
and steadfast friend. In business he was the
soul of honor and the reflection of punctuality.

hearts of his wife and children, Ithl family and

Every member of tho school received a present,
with one exception, and that mistake was after
wards generously rectified. Tho "tree" was worth
not less than $lOO. Our Superintendent has
fust,returned from New York with, a lino collec
tion of hooks, and we now have a library of 250
volumes._ The, average attendance* of soholars
and teachers has been about 80. Occasionally a
friend stops in and honors us by a short address.
Tho lost visit was from Doctor Webb. Aftei'• 'an
interesting little speech the Doctor read a story
and sung u cheerio& melody as only ho could

Thosesfoud'of talking to children will find it
an agreeable pastime to come up and see us, and
give an encouraging word to the school. What
has improved our Poilool so much is the fact. that.
every hotly in the neighborhood reale interested
in it. Heads of families, fathers, mothers, yOung
men and maidens, and children, are punctually
in their places every Sunday. The pleasant,
genial countenance of our Superintendent is
always there. casting sunshine all around him.
111 r. Sears has won a place very near the hearts
of the people of this neighborhood. We .believe
he canto up hero for no other purwose that to do
good, with a heart overflowing with love for the
cause in which he was to engage, and a determi
nation to succeed, he set about his noble work,
The people appreciated hi4-efforts and helped him.
The result has exceeded the expectations of the
most presumptuous. The inhabitants of this dis
trict have been made better for his coming here,
and we mean to keep him if good treatment, re
spect, assistance "love and money" can induce
him to remain. 11.
