Base-hall exhausted itself by its vioiondo.' and
croquet still lingers Out a dewily life. From the
papers we reed wesjudge that ‘.‘ylanchetto"is this
year's i !rftge.", As -smile knowi!Planchette by
name only we will 'describe it. Fancy, then, a
heart-shaped piece of black)widnut, cherry, ma
hogany, or other wood with two castors and a
- pencil for its Seet - . A sheet of white paper is
spread upon ti table and this little machine placed
thereon. The operator' then, putii2.llii or her
finger-tips upon the heart-shaped pieoo of wood ,
and to questions put by spectators Planchette
moves about, writing answers with its pencil leg.
The movements of the affair aro supposed to be
independent of the will of the operator. The
ioformation imparted does not much .enlighten•
people, so far as our observation goes, but some
(*ions things happen at times. Planchette .had
a great run long before wo witnessed any exper
iments with it. In fact it is but a few days since
we saw it in operation. On that occasion we
propounded some questions _which were. readily
ansviered,-thouglinot of much consOquelice. To
the question—" Will it gain to-morrow ?" the
reply was—" No." "flow do you know ?" we
asked. Reply—"l don't know." That was clear

we asked. Reply—" Yes." "How - do you know
that?" Reply—"l don't know it." Alen clear.
"Do yon know anything certain I" Reply—"l
know many things certain," "Well, how is
Mackey ?" Reply—"He is beaten." "How do you
know that r 'Reply—"l know it." Very clear,
you see. • Questions by others were variously
'replied to, sometimes one way and Sometimes the
other way. Altogether, we, don't know much
about Riain i phette; and certainly doubt its setting
tho North River afire. But let nobody imagine
that it is Jost a. toy plaything, _ It is. more than
-that; and our advice 'is not to' give too much
time to it to4he neglect of business and the tan
gible things of being. Tho majority of people
will do well to let it alone. It is not a humbug,
and it cannot do much to let light in upon the
world, at present, if ever.

'Such is a very, common endorsement upon verses
sent to us.evcr3i day in the year.. To very much
oblige anybody; especjally patrons, is always
pleasure. But then,•somo things cannot he adno
as well as others ; and ono of this class of things
is the correction of errors in indifferent rhymes.
We cannot undertake that sort of work in addition
to the lubors which cannot be shirked or avoided
in the strict line of business. It does not follow
that we may not sometimes reject good things
under the rule. , But a communication must have
