"enough" before he went /porae. 41;e/ ig where the trouble eotn, nruced. At &Amt ten o'clock he fleshed his maiden sword iu an altercation with another Delmar elector, though no blood Wes spilt. Right here; in our judgment was the opportzznity to have seared the peace for all day :by arresting both parties and lodging them iu jail for half a day. But Sheriff'Potter, out of it' desire to got along without further interference with the freedom of ele, ctors, and in accordance with counsid freely proffered i l vbieb, in our judgment ho should have re jectei, restored the peace, and let the parties go; It is a noticeable fait that whi/c the sheriff held tho assaulted party in custody, (and the assaulted. &arty_ , n Republican) a demberatic voter tried to interfere against him. In the afternoon a ring light was arranged for between some of tbe parties to the morning fracas, and the "mill" casieoff according to programme in Holiday's burn and barn yard._ This, we suppose; was a gaol-natural "mill," as tbe'parties to 'it parted in good hunter (?). But the example was conta gious, and several "side mills" arose, in which some heavy hitting was done and mach bad Wood develuped. Thp principal cause of the final series of lights was an old grudge between two families. Plentiful potutUms of Whisky had stirred up the slinnbering batted in the bosoms of one' or mere of the co , .titstririts. One threatened tha. lira of the. ether; and the threatened man struck out from the shoulder and struck the threatener down. Sheriff rouer was en the ground as soon as noti fied, and reado every effort to restore the peace. lie milled upon fill good citizens to assist in maintaining order, and in this was 'secOndea by ClAlStai 010 Van Born and others. But the spirit of party here intervened. TWO or three friends • the aggressor in this ease were assisting the Sheriff to got the excited vsaisont of the crowd. A. fow of die Mote vielent and indieoreet of be Democracy regarded this as an attack upon a Democrat, interfered witli'the Sheriff and his posse; and by their cowardly and Parlous appeals endeavored to convert the Mass - into a murder- Ma riot, Ono young: man, capable of better thingirwe hope, boasted of carrying a revolver, and threatened to shoot anybody who should touch him. Tho-attempt to convert the rumpus into a political fight was made by men who form the substratum of the Dernooratio party,—men who are good at kindling fires and running away by the light thereof. The simple truth is that Sherrill' Potter worked nobly and disinterestedly to separate thes6 parties, and several times called upon the bystanders to assist in arresting them lie did, alone, arrest the more powerful man, which Constable Van Horn arrested the other. This ended the fight; and it would have ended long before but for the efforts of a few blind Cop perhe'ads to convert an attempt to separate the parties into an attack upon a Democrat. We hare tried to be just to all; and when it is attempted to fasten upon Sheriff Potter the not which savors of partisanship in the discharge of his duty we shall pronounce it false from begin lag to end. llr e 'were surprised at the manifestations of passiOn by men who ought to have counseled moderation on that day; and at none more than at the declaration of Mr. Sherwood, who, as 'Wa . are credibly informed 'by several, said:alluding to the morniog fracas, that the Democrat Ought..fp hwe killcri the Rcpublicon' oa the •t.: Thealter catikm arose from the use of political epithets, We assure all concerned that men who coun sel killing for words . spoken in the _heat of• political strife, invite tip fate they prepare for .others.,. This:is.the reialt'of such •tealti ing, 'exeMplified in all history. The words were. doubtless spoken in anger; but men recognized' as leaders ought Ago t to indulge' itt such deo. larations. The Assault upon the Republican. headquarters a' ?ow hours later, resulting—in breakage of glass and making good natured Men• angry, thojugh not the act of the Democracy as. a party, nor desired by Mr. Sherwood, still, came Trom the same spirit of violence and ungov erned passion -which we advert to. The young Man who armed himself with a revolver in the morning, and gave newevidence of his instinct- JvOfolty every holm of the day, may rest assured that hone • but cowards and desperadoes carry concealed weapons, as rule.. •We lonlied for no violence on' election day; and but for tho turbu• . knee uf a few men who took good care to keep out of harm's way, there would have been little to complain of.
