At &Amt ten o'clock he fleshed his maiden sword

though no blood Wes spilt. Right here; in our
judgment was the opportzznity to have seared

and lodging them iu jail for half a day. But
Sheriff'Potter, out of it' desire to got along without
further interference with the freedom of ele, ctors,
and in accordance with counsid freely proffered

It is a noticeable fait that whi/c the sheriff held
tho assaulted party in custody, (and the assaulted.

tried to interfere against him. In the afternoon
a ring light was arranged for between some of tbe
parties to the morning fracas, and the "mill"
casieoff according to programme in Holiday's
burn and barn yard._ This, we suppose; was a
gaol-natural "mill," as tbe'parties to 'it parted
in good hunter (?). But the example was conta
gious, and several "side mills" arose, in which
some heavy hitting was done and mach bad Wood
develuped. Thp principal cause of the final series
of lights was an old grudge between two families.
Plentiful potutUms of Whisky had stirred up the

of the co , .titstririts. One threatened tha. lira of the.

and threatened to shoot anybody who should
touch him. Tho-attempt to convert the rumpus
into a political fight was made by men who form
the substratum of the Dernooratio party,—men
who are good at kindling fires and running away
by the light thereof. The simple truth is that
Sherrill' Potter worked nobly and disinterestedly to
separate thes6 parties, and several times called
upon the bystanders to assist in arresting them
lie did, alone, arrest the more powerful man,
which Constable Van Horn arrested the other.
This ended the fight; and it would have ended
long before but for the efforts of a few blind Cop
perhe'ads to convert an attempt to separate the
parties into an attack upon a Democrat.
We hare tried to be just to all; and when it is
