history, nothing but a dark record'of self, minis
ering unto self, trusts betrayed, life's promise
blotted out, bettor aspirations eliminated from
the soul, and the impulses of vice pulsating in
their stead,—such a man needs compassionating.
For him, oh,"Pity, diStill your gentlest tears!
For ho has crossed the divide of life;, he has
chosen hisimitkitnd aheadefei4h," to him, is
a fearful repetition of the unlovely past." He iitY(,
destroyed the ,bidenee - which was in'tho beginning!

for him save by a Miracle. Conscience long' age'

['avulse or principle—cold_ soulless calculation .
Ile is a very Lazarus in spiritual poverty, without
the innate g,opcod.whieh bridged - the gulf 'from the
gates of luxurious Dives to the ProMised Land.
The life of such a man is given to the devilish
work of leveling down. If there be a man of
generous impulses and noble intentions, the
Pariah whom we have feebly described above,
Conceives fer him a bitter and murderous hatred,
and would, were it in his power, sweep him and
every one of his class out of existence. (liven
him to people the_ earth, it would swarm with
villains, thieves, gamblers, liars, and
mOnsteri). = , Ms - hat:rod-begins DtvinitY, :and:
trickles its slime down through the mass of hu
manity, excoriating every creature above his
level like the discharge of a purulent ulcer. , So
goes he through the world, never trying to up
lift any man or woman who may (if possible) be
a trifle lower, and always plotting to drag every
man or woman above him down to his own level
of degradation. Such is the logic of persistent
evil.doing, suer', feebly pictured, young man, is
the spectacle of an ill-spent life. Need w i e urge

the paths frequented by such young men ? Hardly,
we presume ; for it seems very like warning a
man of sense not put his hands into molten iron,
or the traveler n?t to walk off a precipice in
broad daylight. 5 i-
—lt is a matter of skill to kindle a fire and do
it promptly and well. Can anybody build a

build a fire requires mechanical skill, caicuiatipn,

everybody to get such accomplishments? Not
out of books, not orally. If a poet is born, and
