1, That on and after July 1, 1868, eight hours of for

deemed and held to be a legal day's work, in all' cases
of labor and service by the day, whore there la no con
tract or agreement totite contrary. ,

farm or agricultural abor, or service :by the year,
month, ar week; nor shall any person be provontod, by
anything herein contained, from working as many homes
orer time, pr extra work, as' he or she may see lit, the

present. The children, who wore out in force,
enioyed the proceedings greatly.
PRE FOTIRTI.I AT CoVINGTO;s ‘ I.—` 'Re- %
porter, writes us of "doings" at-Covington on the'
4th, as follows:—"Some days since. the members
of the "Covington - Band" pestered the .village,
advertising a "Festival" to take plaaci on that
day, for the benefit of thO'ufunds" of that institu
tion. They enlisted in their cause some of the
7oung ladies of the town, • and General Putnam
kindly allowed them the use of the grove for the
occasion: Boothe, stands, seats, and swings
vire erected, and everything put in complete
order. The grove was filled, afternoon and late
in the evening, with throngs of.visitors and not
s ribald word was spoken, or drunken gesture
made during thaentdre tiara ; (for which thanks
ore due to Messrs. Pino Clark,. their. Bare bring
hermetically sealed all day 'and evening) and the
Lund police, with theirpeakb/ue badges found
their "occupation gone.", The Band discoursed
bred music. The ladies - (and : bless renal)
flitted hero and there like butterflies on the
rammer air. The men (God keep them!) seemed
to take it stoically ; America (they
can take core of themselves) got outside of a largo
amount of Ice Cream and - "lda' cold' IleniOnifde,"
and at a rate that, astanislaed; their Seniors.
Nothing marred the scene, and the oldest inhab
ittat--(pow in good health) never, saw so quietn
