MORE SWINDLES.—WO see it stated
that a new swindle is in preparation for Tioga
county\ farmers. It is in the shape of a patent
iron sham -and, recommended for its economy.
Farmeis are cautioned against purchasing this
"Aonoinical\aorangement, unless they aro aching
for a burn. The better way is to let all hum
bugs alon'. This swindle has, itis said, cost the
Western Farmers \ ‘2oo.ooo. As a rule, all desirable
improvements in farming utensils can bo pro
cured at the nearest \ d7ot for such implements;
and it does not stand e reason tha, any man can
travel and deliver heavy \ goods as 'cheap na you
can get them from a regular local dealer.

he seemed to get his tasks without 'effort; what
others studied hard to learn appeared to come to
him by intuition. lie' was foremoid in recitation,
in the sports of boyhood, in fdats of agility and
Strength. He was a natural mechanic, a good
draughtsman, composed with case, Was almost
wise in everything. The neighbors looked 'upon
him as a prodigy and predicted grent things, for
him. At twenty-one ho sat down 'and tried to
select the business of life. Looking over the
business, avocationtt, and professions they all
appeared to him as slow processes of advance
ment. At twenty-five' he bad dabblefd in a dozen
things and failed to suit himielf., Lawswas too
dry and formal, mechanics .too dirty, medicine
too uncertain, and involving too melt sacrifice
of elegant leisure. At thirty' he had made the
round of avocations and made no choke. At
thirty-five be had lost all power to, choose. At
last ho dropped out of mind, and nlten'only recol
leeted that twenty ;fears before there was a lad of
great promise who lacked wisdom and energy to
seize upon Opportunity. And so the lad of prom
ise lapsed into the man of nothingness, and the
possibilities of a life of usefulness and honor
were cdoverted into broken threads in the warp
of life, the loom stopped, and the weft...remained
unfinished for lack of filling. „
,Bad enough! but there may be two sides to
life. We have read of another lad who obtained
theoretical knowledge only by en equivalent of
labor. The seeds of Knowledge fell upon slow
'soil, germinating painfully under the compulsion
of the midnight lamp. Whatever he sowed had
literally to be harrowed in, find hoed many days
in succession. But; as may 'be conjectured, what
was annual and ephemeral with many, became
eternal with him. At twenty-five ho had master
ed the elements of hook knowledge find reduces!
theory to practice. At thirty he had surprised
his old file»ds, and won recognition as a man of
remarkable attainments in the intellectual world.

—The spectacle of aft abandoned man or wo
man is never agreeable. Tho spectaCle of au
abandoned 4raveyard, with its leaning and
broken stones, its graves overgrown with briers
and foul weds, its prostrate fertees, end the gulfs
left, by the:letrioval of bridles to more desirable
places, is also disagreeable. We live strangers
from the regions south and southWestof l Wellsboro

Charleston, or Tioga roads. By no means 'dare
to approach by the road which enters Pearl-st.,
from the southwest. Fur by that • avenue of
egress and ingress you must pass, if your horse
will let you, an abandoned graveyard,: open to
the Commons, with broken stones, briers, thistles,
weeds, and yawning chasms from which the re
mains have been , remo+ed to a better resting
place, the Cemetery. Tho unsightliness of this
place will strike the stranger forcibly. As for
our own pee;ple, they have seen it to often that
they do not mind it much. Tf, as we suppose,
the remains of the relatives of so no of our own
citizens still occupy that awful desolation, and

deposited may be pardoned for waiting some
bedy!s_metion. But the dilapidation, the air of
neglect everywhere visible in land around the
yard, plead for some befriending . : philanthropist
to take steps toward fencing It in, out of the
Commons. Did the body of a friend of ours rest
th4e, and his ghost neglect to appear and pro
test, we should be sorely' tempted to doubt the.
immortality of the soul. Nothing but the rank
est skepticism c.in fully account 'for' the: neglect
whi ' cli we have but feebly described.

As for that matter I see 00 chance for it to get
out of order, so simple is it in its construction.
Among its (lA:Camp:les I nifty •mention the ease .
with which it i's operated, the impossibility iof
putting the needle in wrong, 04 efficient mode
of regulating tension, and rapid work. Another,
and not the least of its advantages over , any
