A WoRD To BUILDERS.—We
. regret
to learn that Messrs. Wright lc Bailey' bay°
prostponed building their proposed brick block,
for the present, and probably for the season.' . We
doobt the profit 4 building more than two stories
of twelve foot—giving walls of twenty-four,feet—
on such foundation as can be bad' on
between the Avenue and }Pain. At 'a depth of
night or ten foot quicksand is found.i!t unknown
.quantities ;• and a wall of fifty feetought to root at
least eight feet below the surface, ' Awall,of half
that height Will'idand firmly if rooted below the
frost, on a gravel bottom. % p ore land is so
eheap it does not pay to build more thati two .
floors, since the higher yon go tho greater,
proportionably, the coat. It seems to us that
substantial brick buildings, tvro.storys high,
without ornament, may bo built safely this year,
or any other year, l and when built Will pay well.
Let no hope that present plans may be so modi
fied as to render all •projected improvements
practicable. .•
