HOLD ON, BOYS !—We are sorry to
notice that somebody has thoughtlessly cut the
maples on the Public Square, apparently with :ft
jackknife, to see the sap run. This 'is bad fdr

• PLASTER.—Messrs. I. (;iiimpney fi

their mills on Eik Run, this county. 'The crude
material exists in inexhaustible quantities on the
premises, and an antillsis proves it to be, as we
are informal, equal to the Cayuga plaster for
fertilizing purposes. The prorors of The
Agitator propose trying it on small scale for

Cl.hreh people, has-a . physical and "liygienic iii
well as a spiritual significance. It is sinihy 6
period of forty days in Which such Christia is as

stitut4 in moilory of ihe llesurreetitn. The re
ligious significance of the Lenten itiloil is obri

susSlirist.
.The hygienic and moral significance
is not so obv ious to the arises of Clhrlstilins. Jt
has ii, 'philosophy, however, and (4, lesson to ,bc
heeded by every one. Spring, as the name indi
cates, is the season of
,quiekening, the resurrec
tion of vegetable life, and the renewal of animal
vigor. Do people ever think of the beautiful sig
nificance of, the Resurrection occurring in Spring
time? Does it not aid to impress the mind with
the continuity of the Chrietlan Plan? Is it not
an aid to belief? To the philosophy of Lent :
All life is quickened, and what but yesterday sp•
neared lifeless to-day begins to assume forms of
beauty. But 'the Offeat T.l' ii owlet° more' Strikleg
than inl hi; the quiekenig of hnman pate:l92i and

at this season, and by Consequence the power to
resist tempted:l43%A less'. SOFely,,4ea': „ ri )3,41 is
the necessity of some check upon this 3 dewily
to excess, and the example of the Eoundr of the ,
Christian system affords - it. 4 The bb,ser 4 nee pf
Lent provides a corrective. , No feet is 13 . 3, ter es
tablished than that a fruga ' diet tends to strength,
en the moral and refine the spirituel diture: , A
diet chiefly vegetable holds the passions in check
and gives freerl, cope to the nAind and tone to the,
will: Doubtless this led te, the forty, days fast of
Jesus. The teaching to the Christian werlsl 7 -„-by,
which we mean all who wept the Christian ti's ,
tens, without regard to church-membership—is of
self-denial, lending tei a triumph of the soul over,
„the body and its appetites. At present Lent is
indifferently observed—feu' men and women'hav
ing self-denial enough developed , to put them
selves on a spare diet. On the other hand,' as if
to prove that religion is: generally a secondary,
consideration where appetite is involved, the
festival of Easter is very generally observed by .
professors' and non-professors. We questlott the
good sense of the establishment of this fe;di'yal. '
It follows upon the heels of a profound fast; and
the practical effect upon those who observe the ,
fast iS a rebound to the °lipoid() extreme. ,Tfpon ,
those who rho not observe Lent, the effect is iii-•
creased ga l rmandizing. Tho real good of a -fast
is the subjugation of appetite. The real good 'of .
a feast we have not beeti'Syeto., FOefelaye•

spiritual symbolism of gluttony; and Moro' than
that we should not believe in it if ten - thousand -

uo higher expression than eating and 'drinking
we mistake those emotions in tote.
—March, which came in like a lion, departed

The inspiration of its latter days found often
expression in such terms as"delightful weather!"

there is supposed to lie a fly in every , pip of goffee,
so dusty roads in parch, in , this latitude, ttO. not

three o'clock, afternoon, we had seen several suns
