_ FIRE IN Cr-nut,LEsToN.—We neOected
to note last week the destruction by firo of the
dwelling of Mr. J. C. Jacobs, of Charleston, on
Sdfiday night, 16th ult. The house was new; or
nearly now. Mr. Jacobs and his family were
absent, attending meeting at Crooked Creek,
- when the fire occurred. It is thought to have
taken from a defective storc•pipc. , There was a
partial insurance.
A FINE POR?I.—On the first page Neill
be found, and by all loreis of genuine poetry
read with pleasure, a poem from the March num
ber of The Atlantic, by one of townsmen, Mr.
Gee. W: Scare; We regard "John 0' the Smithy
equal in all respects to anything of Maelmy's.
The rhyme and rhythm, and the spirit of the
poem are very fine. '. - Cre congratulate Mr. Sears
upon his successful first appearance in the world
of first-class literatur, and predict Or him a
steadily increasing reputation. Mr. Sears also
contributes to "Our Young Folki" Alagrinc.

THE ESCAPED PlusoNErtrAfojT.—liVe
mentioned the escape of Henry 'AT4i . t;'lfrorn the '
Sheriff on his way to the Penitential', two weeks
ago. The young, man wag sentenced to the
Penitentie.v for the larcedy of a cunt. 11:3
diously refused to let his ti•oul)le be communica- '
ted to his friends in OtsegU county, N. Y., al
leging that he should neret return to them again.
Last week an uncle of -t.14 prisoner arrived in
town, bringing with him a certificate from many
of the first citizens, of Unadilla, going to show
that ho wag,a native and resident of that town,
and lrad always borne a good character. That
ho owns n farm of fifty acres there, and has
at interest.
‘ Also that he is weak in intellect.
The case seems a hard one, and the almost err
tainty that the young man 'was Med when he I
jumped from the cars, lends a melancholy inter
est to the whole affair. The names of leading
merchants, and business men aro appended to the
certificate. -
..(4 ELITE A Cilit:vaE.—Seventeen years
ago on indictment was found by a Virginia Grand
Jury against a woman for:teaching a slave to
read. The indictment set forth that the accused,
"not having the fear of God before her eyes; but
moved and instigi4cd thereto by the Devil, did
teach a certain negro woman to read the Bible, to
f4e great di Aptcoeure of A baylita God." The
triet attorney who framed that indictment Ulf
Ito enklled among the masters of sarcasm. The
woman was convicted and sentenced to tiro veats
in the Penitentiary.
-It will need n great deal of powerful purgative

freedom, yet tolerated such practical blasphemy
as that.
