The truth le, the more a person is out of doors, the less easily does he take cold. It is a widely known fact that persons who come out every night, or sleep tinder a tree for weeks together, seldom take sold at all. . The truthls, many of our ailments, and thosiiof a most fatal form, are tak 4eu by removhig all parts of clothing ~ f tuo soon aftersoming into the house, or lying down on a bed or sofa when in a a tired or exhausted - condition from having engaged too vigorously in do mestic employment. Many a pie has cost an industrious man a hundred dol lars. A human life has many a time paid for an apple dumpling. When our wives get to work they become so inter- ' eeted in it tl at they hod themselves in an utterly exhausted condition ; their ambition to complete a thing, to do some work ,well, sustains them -until it is completed. The mental and physi cal condition is one of exhaustion, when a breath of air will give a cold to settle in the joints s .to wake UP the n oxt . a,ty with inflammatory rheumatiSm, or with a feeling of stiffness or!orencss, 6 if they had been poundi g a bag; lor a sore throat to worry ant trouble them for months; or lung fever to put them in the grave in less than! a week. Our wives must work by the day if theyimust work at all, and not by the job lit is more economical in the end to see how little work they can do in an hour instead of how much. It is slow, steady, continuous labor which brings health and strength and a good diges tion. Fitful labor is ruinous to all. --Ball's Journal of Health. BESIEGED BY FAMISHED CATS.—It is said that an enterprising Yankee, hav ing bought an island in the Ohio river, bee stocked the same with black cats, intending to go into the fur trade. This s reminds' us of a similar experiment; which was made many years ago by a gentleman who resided in Maryland. The idea struck him that the fur trade was so lucrative that it would be much better to raise:them North, and accord . ingly purchased an island in the Ches apeake Bay, stocking it with the black est of bleak cats. He paid extravagant prices Mr •the felines,. and all the hoys in the adjacent country wentextensive . ly lute the business of entrapping un 1-ellspecting Tummies and Tabbies, which 'were immediately disposed and sent to ‘ the aforesaid island: The gentleman found the eats were prolific, and was soon compelled to em ploy two men to live on the island and Bah with a seine, in order to supply them with food. At first the fishermen bad quitecan easy time, and readily supplied fish in abundance for their charges, but the number daily in creased, until whole legions of black eats trooped over the island home, de vouring everything in thesbape of food, • and the men found.it impossible to fur nish the requisite amount of nourish . went. At first it eras determined that one of the men should take a boat, and returning to the main land, report the alarming state of ' pflairs. During the absence ot the messenger, the cats be 'came exceedingly bold, and the remain ing partner fearing for his life, looked himself up in its cabin and prepared ,fora siege. The enemy, emi;'toil by this dis play of fear, and u gEt li On by hunger, L I surrounded the ci se„ climbeo up the sides, staring in a/ he affrighted man through the win ows emit apetures, keeping up the while the must hideous caterivauling. He carefully stopped up every crevice save the chielney, but hearing and seeing ominous falling of soot, which disclosed a determination on the part of the beseiging force to ef fect a surprise, ho closed that opening also, and Mieawber-like - waited for " something to turn up." For two days and nights be was kept in this singular prison l with the dreadful howls of fam ishing cats ever resounding in his ears, and with savage e 3 es glaring at him continually. , At length a party arrived with guns and succeeded i ln succoring the man from his truly awful position, but so numerous were the cats, so tierce their aspect and threatening their demeanor, that both Om rescuers and the rescued Were only too glad to leave this pande- Moniutn of jet black cats, gaunt and ferocious as they were from starvation. The animals, we believe ail perished, and thus ended one of the most exten sive cat-rearing ventures ever recorded. The individual who has started a cat plantation on the island in the Ohio river, may have the benefit of the ex perlenee related abov , -, freer cost.—Ex.
