THE TEMPERANCE MEETING.—The
temperance meeting held Pursuant to notice
at the Court House, Tuesday evening week, was
the largst, most enthusiaatie, and impressive ; of
any thathati ever come under our notice. The
opening address,- by Alexander S. Brewster, Esq.,
constituted one of tlin moat ..ffoatire appoala for.
sobriety ever made in that Court HOUEC. Plain,
unpretending, without aireffort for mere effect,
the address was a model of English composition,
and full:‘,l flip pathos which springs from earnest
convictions. His relation of individual experi

meat from the bonds of Excess worthy of high
praise. Ho was followed by Rev. O. L. Gibson
in an address full of force and fire, and of great
efrect.upon the crowded assembly. Re wielded 'a'
sword of two edges, and spared neither seller nor
drinker. The closing address was by Pim. J. F.
Calkins, who put a few questions in the opening
which wore so neatly answered by his predecessor
and others that the sarcasms went - barbed to the
mark aimed at. Ho closed by reading a drataat
ic poem by'Dr. Nott, full of warnind to the vic-
time of Excess, and very impressively read.
The meeting was held under the auspices of
the County Temperance Union, and IT 41,9 grace
fully presided over by Judge Williams, the
President of the organization. Taken in .con
nation with the revival now in progress' in this
village the meeting cannot fail of lasting goad to
the county.
