A, COURAGEOUS BOY.
.
In Oneida County, in the Statecof
Nev.7'York,' there lived, some years,
since; not miles- from Utica, on
the road:to'Whitesboro,' two farmers,
who, from • some reason, were 'mort4l
enemies. We,will call these men 'Belt:-
ton and White.
Benton was a jquiet, resolute 'man,
Who feared no duper. He was open
as the day, and Ni ith a lacopie air about
him-that won th.
: •confidence of all that
came-near
-fin_the other hand, White 'had a
treacherous, Ilan -dog look 'about him
that,Phiced people on their 'guard,
,lest,
when:tifty,wcre off it, he mightsUddeh
ly spritfgNion them and destroy them.
White - !ivas of an exceedingly cross
disposition, and sought, and kept upon
histfarmthe most untamable, •vicious
brutes,in the form. of the dog •it was
possible to purchase with-money.
i It was known Whit. hated • Beiito,h ) '
andlthis hatred, it was surmised; arose
ft - o'4 disappointed love.. ire bail sought
the band oia Young lady natnied Wilson,
and had been refused, at the knife Linty,
the Ikaly aeeepted an offer of •marriage
from j thn. neighbor, and ,became Mrs.
13entrtiti. ' The disappointed, man •looked
nowhere else for a wife, but taughthim
self to despise, with all hiii• nature, her
whim he fancied he had before .loVed.
But, to return: White permitted his
dogs to range over his lands, — fiercely
attacking those who dared ,to venture
On them. ' Dividing the farms, a lane
ran from the Whitesboro,t-to the Deer
field road, and down this, one afternoon,
in search of berries, little Willie Ben
ton,-a stout boy of ten years, and a sis
ter,/Susie, a child of six summers, wan
dered:
Willie, • fortunately, carried in his
hand a small. sharp-Ogee axe, which
his hither bade him to take to the woods,
and 'amuse himself, While theife, by cut
ting couple of hoop-poles, Which •he
was to bring home, to be used by his
father to hold up the awning of a wag
on. .
The' children sauntered on their Way,
stoppingever&onow and then to gather
some of the wild fruit that grew along
their rnth, and while thus amusing
themselyes, a huge bull-dog, with say
age,..der-y' eyes, and heavy, hanging lips,
jurhped over thp ditch on White's side
of the lane, and before either were aware
of his intention, sprang at the throat of
the little girl, and threw her to t, e
earth. r .
Another moment, and Susan's throat
would have been torn out; but, in that
Moment, even before the brute could
close upon his victim, the boy had
raised the axe ; lid, with all h is strength,
hit the animal i I the head. The blade
glanced from the_skull, and while itcut
open the flesh, and eause.dthe blond to
run freely into the eyes and over the
face of the brute, it did not take from
any of his fierceness.
the dog now turned upon the boy,
leaving his sister terribly frightened,
but, physicallyunharmed, - and made a
jump. at him, which WA ' S boldly met by
the little fellow, who, standing firmly,
swung his a4e over his head, and as the
brute sprang upon him, struck him
squarely upon the ndse, burying the
.blade into it, almost cutting it in , two.
The vicious creature ran back with a
cry of pain, but, recovering himself,
was Again about to Tusli upon the little
fellow, who, without a cry .of fear,
manfully stood his ground, waiting for
a renewal of the attack, when a rifle
ball.whiStled past him, and burieditself
deep in the skull of the savage animal,
dropping him lifeless to the earth.
Fortunately for the children, their
father happened to be sufficiently near
to them to see the dog spring upon
,Willie,
and
not when he attacked
.Susie,) and killed him as soon as he
could fire with ,the 'certainty that the
hall woud not Strike other than the ob
ject or A 11h it was intended.

DUPLEX ELLIPTIC
(OR DOUBLE SPRING)
Si R T‘
REY will not bend or break like the single spring,
T
but will preserve their perfect and graceful shape
when three or tour ordinary skirts will have been thrown
aside as useless. The hoops are covered with double and
twisted thread, and the bottom rods are not only dou
ble springs, but twice (or ,double) covered; preventing
them from wearing out when dragging down stoops,
stairs, &c.
The wonderful - flexibility and great corniest and
pleasure to any lady wearing the Duplex Elliptic
Skirt, will be experienced particularly in all crowded
assemblies, operas, cairrlay,es, railroad care, church pew',
arm chairs, for prom4nade and house dress, as the skirt
can be folded when in use to occupy a small place as
easily and conveniently as s silk or muslin dress, an in
valuable quality in crinoline, not found in any single
spring skirt.
A lady having enjoyed tho pleasure, comfort and
great convenience of wearing the duplex elliptic steel
spring skirt fora single day. will never afterward, will
ingly dispense with their use. For children, Misses and
young ladles they aro superior to all others.
The Duplex Elliptic is a great favorite with all ladies,
and is universally recommended by the fashion maga
sines, as the standard skirt of the fashionable world.
To enjoy the following inestimable advantages In
crinoline, viz: superior quality, perfhot manufacture,
stylish shape and finish. flexibility., durability, comfort
and economy, inquire for J. W- Bradley's Duplex EOM
tie,or double spring skirt, and be sure you get the gen.
pine article.
in CAUTION.—To guard against imposition, be particu
lar to notice that skirts offered as "duplex" have the
red tuk stamp, viz: "J. . Bradley's Duplex Elliptic
Steel Springs," upon the waistband—none others are
genuine. Also notice tha every beep will admit a pin
being passed through tl o center, thus revealing the
two (or double) springs breaded together therein, which
Is the secret of their flex Idlity and strength, and acom
,bination not to be found in any other skirt.
For sale in all stores where first class skirts are sold
throughout the United States and elsewhere. Manu
