THE DANDY AND Ihs - TURREY.--
Chief Justice Marshall was in the hab+
it of going to market and carrying home
his purchases. Frequently he would
be seen at sunrise: with poultry, in one
hand and vegetables in the other. On
one of these occasions a fashionable
young man from the North, who had
removed to Richmond, Va., was swear
ing violently because he could find no
cote to carry home his turkey •, Marsh
all stepped up and asked where he lived,
and on being told said : "That is my
way, and I will take it for you. " When
he came to the house, the young man
inquired : "What shall I pay you ?"
"Oh nothing," , said the Chief Justice,
"it was on my way, and no trouble. "
"Who was that polite old man that
brought hom my turkey ?" inquired
theyoung inn h of a bystander... "That,"
replied he, 'ls John Marshall, Chief
Justice of the United States." "Why
did he bring home my turkey ?" asked
he. "To give you a severe reprimand,
and teach you to attend to your own
business, " was the reply. True, genu
ine greatness never feels above doing
anything that is useful ; but especially
the truly great man will never feel
above helping-himself.

SPlCY.—There was a knot of sea cap
tains in a store at Honolulu, the keeper
of which had just bought a barrel of
black pepper. Old Captain —, of
?Salem; came in. and seeing the pepper,
took up a handful of it.
"What do you buy such stuff as that
for ?" said, he to the Store keeper, - "it's
„

"Peas!" replied ithe storekeepa-;

looked at it, and plunged, their hands

and then gave it as their universal opin

"I tell you there is," said the old cap
tain again, scooping up a handful ; and
I'll bet a dollar on it."
The old Boston argument all over the
world.. They took him up.
"Well," said he, "spell .that," point

the side of the bartel ; "if it isn't half

It happened during' the war that a
clergyman was 'posted to deliver a po

the ability of the speaker, and the result
was many of both parties were present.
Fattier Sabine chanced to be near a rank
Cop i perhead, who took the occasion to

,Copperhead—" , Your preachers mix
politics with their - religion."
Sabine—" What do you BAY ?" The
old man was hard of hearing.
Copperhead'— (V ery loud.) Your

Sabilie—" Yes; Union politics, Your
kited won't mix."
The kind of politics that won't mix
with religion we have no ue for. The
kind that won't "mix" ought to be de
nounced from the pulpit.
EVERY WORD TRUE.-It is a great
and prevalent error, that - children . may'
be left to•run wild in every sort of com
pany and temptations for several years,
und then it will be,time enough to break
them in. This mistake makes half our
spendthrifts, gaMblers,, thieves and
drunkards. No man would deal so 'with
garden or lot ; no. man would raise a
colt or a puppy on such a principle.—
Take notice, parents—unless you till
the now soil and throw in thegood seed,
the devil will have a crop of weeds be
fore you know what is taking place.--
Look at the poor dear children; and
think whether you will lea 'e their safe
ty or ruin at hazard, or, whether you
shall not train them up in the Way they
should go. •
