SALIOULD WOMEN VOTE
,
' ,As this interesting question appears to be fair
ly up for debate, ',suppose .all are privileged • to
speak 'on - the subject. l'Of_One; I Should "be vol'
glad if those who have opinions or arguments_
pro or con, would communicate them, for thus far,
•thet,P appears a remarkable dearth of ideas on the
question. <IPo do not .knon , how the women
themselves' regard the subject, , and with the .ex=
ception of a very few conspicuous ones, - it . really
looks doubtful whether -the women of the. nine. ,
teenth century cafe agreat 'deal for the I privill

It is not so easy us might be suppose?, to form tb

s It is undeniably's stigma on the chivalry- of the'
age; that inen, whose' grand-fathers fought against
thortyranny of enforced " Taxation with - out rep-.
resentation, ' should , insist on ,subjeeting- One
half the nation 'they founded, (and as some say;
the "better half'.') to .the same injustice.' That
they do not seek k to justify themselves in so doing,
is a favorable indication and it may be, they are
'only waiting to be properly solicited; and intend
, big magnanimontly to,grant the boon.
But there are aspects of the ease, so very tiro,
promising of good results, that unless some meth
od can lie devised to restrict the right . of. suffrage
ninth more than at present, I cannot feel that it
is desirable to enfranehise.the women of the wan-.
try. For instance, suppose the woolen of the
great city of Now .Terk were permitted to vote;
does any one believe there would be a change for
the better, in the politics of that city? alas! no;
for the ; better crass - of,women would, remain at

class in full harmony. with those - who ; _now rule
the, affairs of -that great metropolis. '" Purify
your politics," yini ' say ;. - aye,indeed I But how?
That is the great problem of the age; is it not?
I!' it were only the foreign element that wag'-in
fault; perhaps our Radical Congress - migtit do
something,, to cure the pyil,,but they are not rho
Corruptors, only they have aidetlto keep tiloscr'in'
power, who came so near destroying the nation.
!If admitted to 'the ballot, it 'is possible that
women might, under favorable circumstances, be
induced to vote, and they might give one honest
vole, the first. But women, alas I are only ,h.
man, and if they shouldte brought hit
under the in
fluence of political views and motiyes, end with
in the sphere of political intrigue, what reason
